Posted September 15, 2008 Report Share Posted September 15, 2008 No Georgia, not work to foxes, only rats and as a bushing dog, although some lads on here will say that doesn't make a working terrier!! The dogs were great, they're pretty used to all sorts being brought in the house! Once they've been told no, they're good. The interesting thing was the hounds. It is absolutely true that as cubs they must have no scent of a fox about them, as the hounds were completely unfazed. I must say as she got older they got a bit more interested!! Not unless it's what they want to do at that particular moment!! They're not like dogs, they're much more selfish and not really tameable. :db: Not in the true sense of the word. Del I've had two, a dog and a vixen. Both needed a hand,, I wouldn't just have gone and taken one, they're best off in the wild. They are bloody hard work, they drive you nuts, and they are wild through and through!! They do smell, dogs worse, but both have a distinctly foxy smell. They're incredibly hard to house train, they pick up fleas easily and the're a constant worry. I let mine run the guantlet, come and go as they please, but you worry about someone having a pot shot at them, that's why mine wore collars. Not that that will stop everyone, there'll always be some big hard man who doesn't give a damn. After all, they don't have the fear of humans that wild foxes do, and yet the alternative is to keep them caged, which would be criminal. If you're not worrying about that, you're worrying about them causing trouble, the local shoot, the neighbours hens, etc, or if you have a vixen, having her cubs on your bed!!! I absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM AS "PETS". Nor would I encourage anyone to go get one on purpose. If you take one young enough to tame up to be a "pet", chances are it won't survive. If you take an older one, apart from being cruel, he'll never tame up the same way. If one happens to come your way, and you don't mind taking on the devil himself, you can learn an awful lot, and helping something live that would otherwise have died is rewarding, but it's not something to take on lightly. craftycarper 0 Posted September 16, 2008 Report Share Posted September 16, 2008 i read an article in a paper a few years back about a guy who had brought up the odd fox or two, he had the same problems and though they tamed down around the house to a certain degree, once out they did what came naturally and would go on a killing rampage.
