I saw what I think was an authentic Otter Board in a display box of old fishing equipment on a wall in a pub. It was a wooden board about 12 inches long and about 8inches deep and about 1/2 inch thick. It was weighted at the bottom with a lead strip to make it sit upright. There were three or four holes drilled through to top of the board. From what i've read it would be used to take out a team of lures or flies. The upright board acts like a sail and you control it with a line a bit like a kite. All strictly illegal over here now and I've never seen one working so I don't know how effective it would be. But I'm sure there will be someone on here who can provide more info.

There was a lovely programme a few years back, I think it was called "The old man of Coniston".

It was about an old countryman from the lakes who worked all his life in the quarries.

He demonstrated the Otter board and caught some Char for the camera. Very good.

Anyone remember it?

we have something similar here then. we call them sail lines. it's a sail on a wooden X w/floats on the X. you attach a heavy line to it and from the main line you drop various artificial baits (lures, spoons , jigs etc). you let the wind take it out and you bring it back w/ a big fargin reel like you might use to roll up the garden hose. the smart guys rig up an electric motor to the reel and power it off the car battery.

it just shows a good idea will keep popping up, even here (this one time i will admit we're pigheaded and slow to learn)

I used to have that on a video i remember he got some pheasants as well (not with the otter board though!)

what we call an otter board is for getting hanked lures tobys minnows etc out of the river they come in different shapes & sizes ie a rectangle piece of wood 5 by 3 inches with 2 holes in it 1 big 1 & one small 1 the small 1 ontop of the big 1 with a slit going through them you slide it onto the line then in the small hole put a piece of stick or dowel into the small hole to stop the line coming out then slide it down the line to the hank & it swirls around & the spinner comes free thats what i know as a otter board

It was a cracking programme. Do you remember him genuinely tickling the trout in the stream?

And then breaking the large boulder cleanly in half with a small charge of dynamite.
