toolman 0
Hi guys, just landed a 300 acre+ shoot, rabbit and fox control . The land has already been passed as "safe" police marksmen use it for practice every now and again. The previous gun(s) took out 1000 rabbits last year and land owner said it didnt make a dent! So need my F.A.C to be affective. Question: I have had plenty of experience shooting with friends lamping etc but never held my own ticket So what realistically should I ask for to start with? Also I have a few small vermin shoots some passed others not the rabbits are starting to wise up just starting to stretch my air rifle, so I would guess I need an open ticket to be legal. HELP.... Thanks in advance... Edited September 14, 2008 by toolman Quote Link to post
lgray88 4
go for a .22 if your planning on shooting in excess of a 1000 rabbits its will be pretty expensive useing hmr rounds as for the open ticket, most people seem to get these now well most of the licences ive seen are open tickets, im not sure how they determine wether you get a open or closed ticket. liam Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Sounds like another FAC with a Rimfire and Centrefire I would personally, for a lot of Rabbits, and with Rabbits being the main quarry opt for a .22 LR. Ammunition is cheap, A sub-sonic round with a Moderator on will be virtually silent, and so allow for effective Rabbit control with Multi Sitting shots. As for foxes? A bread and butter Fox round with a good availability of ammunition in all price ranges and loads has to be the .223 nowadays. It will drop a fox with no haste at any sensible foxing distance. As for Open and Closed Tickets. You can shoot on any land with a closed certificate as long as it has been passed for the calibre you are shooting by the Chief Officer of Police for the area in which the land is situated and that you have permission to shoot there. If the land has not been passed, then the FEO will need to inspect it first before you can shoot there with a closed Ticket. An Open allows you to shoot anywhere where you think is suitable and where you have permission. You will be very lucky to have an Open on first grant, virtually unheard of for Varmint shooting. You can apply after a "Suitable" time for an Open but most will be granted after the first renewal of five years. I hope this helps. Regards SS Quote Link to post

toolman 0
Thanks guys, confirmed what I'd been told, will go for .22lr with mod for now, hold 600 buy 500, will have a word with my FAO about open tickets when she does the visit... Quote Link to post

Hi From my own recent experience, you could try and get a little more Amo - I put in for .22lr and .17hmr both with 1200 to hold and 1000 to buy - got them both without question. Just explain how bad the vermin problem is and it should come - mine did and South Yorkshire isn't know for being lenient when it comes to authorities. Cheers Westy Quote Link to post
Dan_Smiff 2
If you've got reason for a fox calibre straight away (sounds like you have) then put in for a .223 at the same time - you may have to have a mentor for your first few outings (which I think is the case for any centre fire application these days, could be wrong) but it'd be worth it and would saving paying to add it later. As for the land - I doubt you'll get open from the outset but many on here have said that after adding several permissions to their closed licence, the force has agreed to open it up for the sake of both them and the holder (less paper work and checks!). Cheers Westy I put down 1200 to hold and 1000 to buy and was knocked down to 600 & 500 by Northumbria even though it was for club use and they had okayed 2 X .22 .308 .38/357 and a .44 BP revolver strange breed these FEOs.
