blue2 0
Advice anyone, i have a Bedlington who,s appetite is awfull, id like to build him up a little, as he,s a skinny thing you can offer him tinned dog food and he'll eat ok, the next day he'll go without, ive tried him on raw mince and he seemed to like it but went off that, basically chaps he'd rather starve or go without for 2 days than eat normal dogfood. By the way hes a pet only and has always been a fussy eater, but lately he's got worse. Edited September 14, 2008 by blue2
will82 0
Hi blue, Ive got a bedlington, whippet, greyhound lurcher bitch who is a terrible eater, I have tried everything with her. Sometimes she can eat great but a lot of the time she just picks. The only thing I've found to work with her is to feed her twice a day. I feed her raw tripe in the morning which she cant resist as well as hers and the others usual feed in the evening. Its an ongoing struggle and I hope that she doesn't get fed up of this. Hope this helps a bit. Edited September 14, 2008 by will82
stormrider8 59
How do you feed mate. Normaly if you feed the same time every night or morning, what ever you prefer. Give them 15 minutes to clear there food, if they dont just pick it up. Same thing the next day. I find most dogs get an appetite this way. one meal time same time every day. Good luck
prohunter 0
storm hit the nail on the head if you change the eating time then the dog will seem to its self that it is never hungry. also mate do you feed him treat or scraps off you plates this is bad for two resons it won't have all the Nutrients the dog needs, plus he will think if he doesn't eat his food then he will get these very taste scraps. hope that helps. hunter-girl 10
stormrider8 is right - my dog is the same, really really fussy! I tried food after food after food, I now use Royal Canin, with hot water on it - he loves it. I know it is expensive, but rather that than the dog not eat. Also its not good for them to keep changing their diet. Make sure you weigh him and match it with the right amount of food on the bag, no more and no less, (i think to many people just gess the amount and then the dog is not getting the right diet), then split that into two meals, one morning and one evening - give him 15 - 20 mins to eat it then take it away. Dont give anything else to the dog during the day (no tip-bits!) he will soon get the idea that if he dont eat it when it is there then he dont get anything else to eat!! Hope this helps!!! IanB 0
Try him on some minced chicken, the dogs love it, will put some weight on him...
gnipper 6,485
Mine aren't keen on minced chicken at all but love the un minced carcases. My whippet has always been a picky eater and I've struggled to put weight on her, she eats just enough dry to keep going but it seems to not help her at all. She does well on a raw diet though and I think its a wheat allergy in the dry which fecks her up and I think she knows this and thats why she picks at it. Try just giving the dog tripe and chicken if it will eat it.
blue2 0
Thanks for all your replies guys and girls, most of the ideas ive tried except the tripe so ill give that a go. He seems as though he just eats enough to get through the day, similar to what another poster experiences. He's fed pretty regularly time wise, but just recently ive had to resort to feeding him rubbish now and then just to get some weight on him. That was probably a mistake. The awfull thing is though the more excersise he gets the worse he looks as he eats about the same but is burning it off quicker
