Starting a dog single handed

Recommended Posts

How many of you chaps started your first dog on your own when your started out digging?

Its looking like this is the way im going to have to do it because i cant find anyone anywhere who would let me tag along and show me the ropes.

I havent got any digging to terriers experience and its a bit daunting!! I also cant find any permission and for the last 2 -3 weeks have just been getting rejections!!

It certainly isnt an easy game to get into thats for damn certain and i can only imagen its gotten harder since the ban!

cheers

Get out there nog,i did for over 20yrs on my own, you'll learn more slowly without someone to show you the way but you'll learn a lot quicker than being sat in the house.

It took me prob 10yrs before i started getting any decent permission...the terrier game is a long road to get to where you want to be and if your not dedicated you will lose interest before you get there...but if you stick at it one day you'll get a bit of luck.

How old are you nog? If your a young lad you will find it harder to get permission but as you get older it gets easier(not much tho)

Not an easy task mate. Not only have you to get your dog travelling ,then hitting fox, then finding then digging then lifting then backfilling correctly.I dig a lot on my own and its tricky when you ve no one to ask for help or a blow out on the tools.Safer making friends with the right people who will teach you the right way to work a terrier and despatch game etc .Its not rocket science when you know how.

THE POLITICAL SITUATION HAS DONE A LOT OF HARM BUT ONE OVERLOOKED THING IS DEPRIVED A LOT OF YOUNG NEWCOMERS OF MENTORS

Just keep at it mate, start off doing a bit of rabbiting or ratting if you can get it then build up your permission, and if you got a motor get traveling, some places are easier to get permission than others

Cheers mate.

I got plenty of rats for her down the farm next to me but i swear to god this farm is the only farm in the whole of Dorset without any fox holes or foxes! Iv been travelling out and about asking but alot of the ground i ask about has the hunts over it

look for shallow spots, judge the height of field from entrance,if you read the books you put your dog in and he locates and you dig him out.Not always as simple as that give him time to settle make sure your dogs in control get a solid mark dig him.If you believe thats going to happen every dig think again,we ll never know whats going on in the ground and you ll be left scratching your head lots of times. For your dogs safety and your own you really need to find a friend IMO learn together at least 2 heads are better than 1 and make sure you ve got a locater.
