hunter-girl 10
My dog split his nail last week out lamping. it was ok, but now i have noticed that the top half of the nail is hanging off exposing the flesh underneith but the bottom half is still in place and it is very sore to touch - he is not lame as such, he just keeps licking it and wont run as he normally does. A couple of people have said to cut it off back to the toe but i have never done this before and im a little worried about cutting the quick. Can anyone give me any advise that could save me from going to the vet and giving them all my money??
J Darcy 5,871
Clip it as short as you dare. Leave the other nails as they are. Bathe in hot salty water twice a day for a few days. keep it clean and as dry as possible to avoid infection under the nail.

The top of the nail is split right back to the toe and sticking upwards and is showing all of the quick underneith
poacher2225 2
have you got aney pics of it cos my old bitch done the same and i played about with it but it made it worse i wish i took her to the vet to have it pulled out so it could grow back when she done it cos now the cuticle is done in and the nail has grown back at the wrong angle and the vet cant fix it now that was two year ago and she is just comeing back now she has still got a limp now and then when she walks on hard ground but the vet said she is just playing on it now so i would go to the vet if its bad it will save you money in the long run

poacher2225 2
if you take it up the vets its 60 or 70 quid to have the nail pulled out and it will grow back good in 2 or 3 weeks thats how i would do it now after what i went through my old bitch
blackdug 90
poacher 2225 has got it spot on ..i had the same last month ,,my problem was the same but she also had knocked her toe ,,,it,s a hard one i chose not to go to the vet and i got it wrong ,she ended up with an infection and is still out ,i went to the vet in the end and she got anti biotics and it calmed right down ,,the vet wanted to take the nail right of but i wanted to give it some time but it ended up falling of anyway in the garden , i think if it was just the nail and the toe is ok ///then take it back till the quick ..you can see this by looking from the pad side of the nail better ...one problem is if the nail is really badly broken it is better to get it taken of completly as i think it gets it over with and it grows back ok but maybe you might need anti biotics..... to anyone reading this always keep your running dogs nails really trimmed as most times it is long nails that causes broken nails,,all the best
hunter-girl 10
Thanks ever so much for all your comments - it has been a great help to me in deciding what to do I got some anit-biotics for him and got my mate mark to have a good look at it today and he chopped the nail off as the toe wasn't hert - already he is feeling better! WHAT GREAT NEWS!!!!
