piking

Recommended Posts

hello guys i was just wondering what the best time to start piking as me and my mate love it.

Hello mate

Its always been traditional to start piking in october. The last few years with the winters getting later and later i have been not really getting serious until mid November. The trouble with the warmer months is they fight to hard and often do themselves harm. Also once the frosts have come the prey fish shoal up and location is easier. Watch for the grebes and cormarants hunting and the pike wont be far away. TIGHT LINES

the females dont really feed when they are carrying young so the when they gine birth they feed like mad and thats usually around october
I am sure you are having a laugh scent. Pike spawn around late febuary early march so that the pikelets are developed enough to feed on other fry that hatch later. Until then they feed on smalll pond life and eachother.Best time to catch a big hen fish is prior to spawning in late winter when shes full of roe. Sometimes they can put on a  third of their normal weight. They dont give birth cmon

smashing pike pal i couldn think of the word spawn thats why i said birth :wallbash:

Thanks for the pm scent.

I see you are in the emerald isle, No shortage of esox there. I was going to say you cant beat a float fished livebait, But they are banned in your neck of the woods lol. Deadbaiting with seabaits eg mackeral and herring is always worth a try. Smelts are a good early winter bait if you can get them, They smell like cuecumbers but their a killer bait, eel sections and course deads to. Failing that spinning and even flies are worth a try. But always use a wire trace.

Love it
