garden gun

Recommended Posts

i think you do but is a licence nedded for a garden gun?????

Probably not when garden guns were first popular. Now though, they will be classed as a firearm needing a full FAC I would think.(If ammunition is available for it)

Most fire a "Flobert" type bullet, that is a dumpy bullet between 5mm and 9mm propelled just by the primer. This makes them ideal for garden pests at short range, without blowing up the cabbage you were trying to protect in the first place.

It depends entirely on how long the Barrel is and if the bore is Rifled.

A few of them were 9mm rifles converted to smoothbore but some still have signs of rifling.

If the barrel is over 24" then they can be held on SGC. Under then FAC. Also there are some which have magazines over 3 shot and so would either needed to be limited or put on FAC.

As for ammunition. You can still get it. There is some for sale on here somewhere: http://www.justcartridges.com

They are great for short range ratting and things. Great fun now and again.

SS

P.S They fire Shot Shells, if they are smoothbore ;)

Garden gun is a shotgun not a rifle. sgc required to possess one.

Sorry mate you are not correct. If a little rifle is chambered for a 9mm Flobert, it's a rifle whether it's smooth bore or not. Rifling would not be too much advantage when the recommended range is only 15 yards or so. As SS says, you may get away with a SGC if the barrel is over 24.5 inches.

I have an old Rottweil ammo catalogue, and they did ball bullets and pointed bullets in Flobert, also little shotshells which they say can be used without harm in a rifled barrel, although they state most garden guns are smoothbore.

are garden guns not 3 bore forgive me for my ignorance, shoot small silver case cartridge papper end could even be rim fire. :icon_redface:

Nothing as huge as 3-bore doga. They were rimfire though, as I said before popular sizes were 5mm to 9mm. The Flobert cases fired the bullet quite gently with the rimfire primer only, although later Floberts had a small propellant charge as well. You could change quickly between bullet and shotshell as the target demanded.

You are almost right, they were in fact called No 3 rather than 3 bore.

I had one when I was a boy, I think it was a Webley, 3 shot bolt action smooth bore. Used to buy our shot gun license in the Post Office in those days for 7/6d. Great for rats in the old swill shed.
