thurso jack 3
My JRT has been limping on her rear left leg quite badly now for a week, she doesent want to put any pressure on it and if given a few days rest it seems to get better but if she runs about on it for any duration of time shes back limping on it? Could it be she has damaged it or could it be a hereditory hip problem? whats your thought?? On a lighter note. She was fine last night so i took her for a walk around the river, and on my way popped into my old mans house to see if he wanted to come also, so he brought along his lab and spaniel, anyway about half way round we heard the dogs going into a large storm drain/canal that is about 8 foot wide and 5 foot deep, it often holds ducks and runs parralell to the river so the dogs always make a bee line to it, nothing new tonight either, we heard them all splashing around in it, then the lab and spaniel appeared at our sides and no jack russell, we listened for a second and herd the noise of her splashing heavily in the water, and ran immeadiately towards the noise, now my dad is nearly sixty but he ran up the hill towards the drain like a stag, beating me to the top, upon reaching the top of the hill he was greeted by the dog barely staying above water, she seemed to be caught on something submerged below the water and with the combination of a bad leg and exhaustion was seriously struggling to stay afloat, she is normally a very good swimmer, anyway without a seconds thought, the old boy was in the canal up to his oxsters in a move david hasslehoff would have been proud of and had the dog by the scruff of the neck and threw her to me before i helped pull him out. By this time it was around 8 pm at night and the walk home was more than i could take because if we passed one person we passed 40, all looking and wondering why my dad was soaked to the bone in dirty brown water, squelching all the way back to his house, i didnt know where to look, certainly not at him because i couldnt keep a straight face . Anyway my mum promised to get him a pair of red trunks if hes serious about this life saving lark! All joking aside, ive got to take my hat off to him though, the dog was nearly done and he didnt think for himself he just went in, for all he knew it could have been 20 ft deep and he himself isnt a great swimmer Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
are you sure its a painfull leg .... as russels are known for lifting a back leg off the floor when trotting along ........ Quote Link to post
thurso jack 3
Hi socks. its definately causing her discomfort, i know what you mean when they skip along on three legs, but this is even when she is walking or going up stairs. I just hope it isnt more serious than a knock, but i have felt all around the leg and she is showing no pain to touch. which is worrying me that it may be a hip or socket problem? Quote Link to post
tricky dicky 0
Afernoon T.J. If you have any access to a portamag magnotherapy unit theyre definately worth a go i can vouch for their effectiveness on greyhounds & cant see why it woudnt help your JRT most trainers use them if you happen to know any? theyre horrendously expensive to buy though your oldman sounds a goodun!! Cupid Stunt 18
There are varying degree's of severity with regard to a dislocating knee so it may just have got worse. Chimp, i wouldn't call £300 or £400 that expensive if you have running dogs. Quote Link to post
Guest Duzabit
Ok mate. I had a russell bitch with the same problem. Started carrying her back leg at about 6 month old, it got very painfull when trying to bend it. Took her to the vets, it turned out to be perthes disease, which is a malformation of the hip joint caused by loss of blood supply. it cost a bit for the operation to round off the joint, and she was A1 after about 6 months. Had a hell of a lot of stuff with her, still got her now at 13 year old. It is genetic and common in terriers, as are dodgy knee joints, get the dog checked out if it don't get no better. Duz Cheers Duz, i have had my suspicions that it may be something like this she is 14 months old and it has just started in the last month, i would have expected her to have gotten over a knock by now, ill take her to the vets this week and get them to check it out. CumbrianJack 2
Luxating patellas is a disease thats rife in some terriers can cost you a lot of money in vets fees if you go for operations, sometimes its best just left alone unless causing alot of pain, it is hereditary but can also be caused by a severe injury. I have often been asked by dimwits if i could sell them a dog that hops about on 3 legs as they seem to think a JRT should do this :realmad: Quote Link to post
