thatmusicman 0
I ask this because I use terriers solely for bushing/working hedges and would love a patterdale that won't go to ground. I've got a 10 year old dog who is great at bushing, but loves going to ground too- for me, it's a real pain in the ass because I'm never equipped for a dig. If we're walking somewhere new that we don't know, guaranteed he'll find an earth and stay there baying for a couple of days. His mum was russell/patterdale, and the dad was border/russell. I've got two border bitches, mother (7) and daughter (2) who are great for bushing, and stay out of trouble. They'll go to ground if he does, but not on their own, so I have to keep him on a lead now (he's lost 8 teeth to badgers). I've always had a soft spot for patterdales but worried I'll have the same trouble if I get one. Should I stick to borders, or has anyone had experience of patterdales that won't go to ground. Here's some pics of 'em. Quote Link to post

thatmusicman 0
I know what you're saying, my dog would be a dream for a digging man, I just prefer seeing them flush quarry from the hedges and love watching them chase it down! Quote Link to post
Guest Leveller
Have you ever thought about going out equipped for a dig instead? Quote Link to post

allgame 0
why dont you swap your dogs for some ones that wont go to ground im sure you could have sold them for a fiar bit if there really that good all your doing is wasting a good dogs potenial if your after somthing that will just walk around in the bushes im sure you could pick one of them up off the side of the road. Kye 77
If all you want is a bushing dog mate, i would go with a Plummer,...they have great noses, and hunt VERY well!...great for rats and rabbits, and they can be taught to retreave with a little work...some may go to ground, so be careful, but if i was wanting an all out bushing type of dog, then i would go for a Plummer everytime!.. kirstysdad 827
what to do is buy yourself a springer and to help you out with kennel space i will take that terrier of you as long as it stays for days Quote Link to post

thatmusicman 0
Cheers for the replies, I won't be writing off the idea of getting a patterdale one day then, I just always presumed they were mad for getting to ground and that's all they were used for. Quote Link to post
cymruguy69 5
Like said before if you want a bushing/beating dog get a spaniel. A working Terrier is a earthdog imho but thats another debate. Don't get me wrong ratting is really good fun but if you got a dog that goes to ground and stays use him. A good working dog that stays nowadays is like gold dust to some people. Quote Link to post
