pidge 2
Hi all Ive got the oppurtunity to obtain a collie x whippet x greyhound pup. I currently work a straight beddie to rabbit and to be honest theres nothing wrong with the team (Me n Beddie). But trouble is sometimes it can be annoying when we miss the squatter out in the open field and ive often thought in the past and said to the bitch "we could do with some longer legs for you" My only fear is ive got to go through introducing another dog to our family inwhich i cant see the Beddie being all that chuffed after having full attention of the family for the last 3 years. And also when were out the beddie pays me full attention shes like a border collie in them stupid dance shows(im sure theyve got chocolate in there hands) I dont want to sacrifice this with another dog. The beddie is a bitch and ive got chance of dog or bitch in the pups. All opinions welcome good or bad. Quote Link to post

All dogs enjoy havin some other 4 legged company and although it might take time, a new dog will be excepted by Beddie - you will just find that she will be top dog!! which means you have to treat her like one - feed her first, fuss her first, treat her first, speak to her first etc. do you want to breed? That will decide if you want a dog or a bitch - but just remember 2 bitches will fight when in season Helen Quote Link to post

littlefish 585
I have one dog and one bitch and they get on very well as long as the dog remembers that the bitch is the boss! The bitch seems to naturally get on better with male dogs. I know they all have different personalities but i think i was always be swayed to keeping one of each sex after seeing they way these two get on. It is quite harmonious - important i think especially if they are living in your house with family etc. Good luck with whatever you choose. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Just to correct the statement that said that bitches fight when in season! I have NEVER known this: they are far more likely to spend their time mock humping eachother. We have bitches and dogs: the dogs are kenneled at night even when the bitches are not in season, that way they don't have too much of a problem when they have to be kenneled full time when there are in season bitches. But we also separate in season bitches so they can't go and wind the dogs up in front of their runs! Not fair on the dogs. Bitches often bring eachother into season, or rather their heats come to coincide with the others. I've currently 3 bitches in season: they are in a kennel away from the rest, and spend the days happily flirting with eachother LOL If you only have one dog and one bitch, it is useful to get one of them used to going in a kennel and run at certain times, for when the bitch comes in season. Or you could get a crate and crate the in season bitch in a separate room in the house, one to which the dog must never have access: she's only going to be in it for 3 weeks or so: obviously needs to be let out to pee etc. (Sorry, had to put that bit in just in case any numpties think I'm reccomending incarcerating the bitch for 3 weeks solid LOL) Dogs will tend to territory pee when their bitch is in season: house training may take a dive, though if you are a strong leader and let the dog know in no uncertain terms that you will not tolerate any peeing round the house, all but the most oversexed animals will learn the score. Hope this helps Quote Link to post

I'm not interested in breeding my dogs so..............the bitch is speyed. Good point also in Skycat's post about using a cage. Not all visitors like dogs - putting them in a cage is a good way of keeping them safely out of the way - less stress for the visitors and the dogs. Quote Link to post
