R_Oldroyd 17
I know that the number of snares is governed by the area you have to cover. But on average how many snares do you guys put out. And how long to you leave them before you move on to new pastures Regards Roger Quote Link to post
Rolfe 2
I know that the number of snares is governed by the area you have to cover. But on average how many snares do you guys put out. And how long to you leave them before you move on to new pastures Regards Roger Roger......as you alluded too...........it all depends on the rabbit traffic and perceived numbers of same. I rarely put out less than 50........and anything up to 250-300 if the runs are numerous. On average i suppose 150 at a time more often than not. I like to leave mine out for 3 nights maximum(some prefer 2).........then move them....most rabbits will have been accounted for by then if you have done the job right. Any longer and Mr Fox or Badger will have found a new feeding area.....having been alerted to the area by snared rabbits. Often i will "rest" an area for several weeks before returning for another session......Hope this has helped a bit Regards Rolfe. Quote Link to post
R_Oldroyd 17
Once again Rolfe a good call. Will be setting about 250 to 350 along a motor way embankment with heavy traffic. Regards Roger Quote Link to post
IanB 0
They can also become snare shy, when they hear their best buddies sqealing like a bitch and feed in another area to what you have snared... 2/3 days is good, and choose a windy forecast for best results...Also be aware of other predators present taking your catch/snares if fox numbers are high, they can take a lot of snares, pegandgun had % of his snares taken/lost from foxes in one area he snared...Obviously if this is a problem, sort it out also. victor 10
as mmanny as i can, and leve them for 3 or so days, just move them or give it a weeks rest at that spot and start all over again. Quote Link to post
pegandgun 52
If you want to keep charlie off your rabbits tie your snares to a 4 foot 3/4" thick length of hazel instead of a peg then when the rabbit gets caught it pulls the stick to the hole and you come along and pull the snared rabbit out and kill him. Before you do this buy a large wheel barrow to carry 150-200 hazel sticks in and make sure that there is no fences brash os other obsticles between your snaring position and the holes lol.Another warriner trick thats totally useless to a real rabbit snarer. There is no way of keeping charlie off your snared rabbits except to kill him.You do get alot less hastle off mr fox if you snare on really black windy nights (because he cant hear the squeeling snared rabbits in the strong wind),which is why you will kill far more rabbits on black windy nights. But this is not alwys possible or on well keepered estates where there is obviously less foxes........P@G...... Quote Link to post
