what age do you think a dog hits its prime

Recommended Posts

First season they are just weans. Second they learn their trade, third they hone it to perfection. I would say a dog from 3-6 years is in its prime. Allthough some dogs carry on running well up til around 7-8 years old, speed usually starts to drop, stiffness after a long shift can set in and sometimes their nose can start to falter a bit as well. I noticed with my collie crosses when they get to around 8 years old they can still find game, but sometimes in thick cover it takes them longer to pinpoint it, which was never an issue when they were younger, so perhaps all the dogs faculties begin to slow down. When you look at it in these terms, you never get anywhere near long enough with a lurcher, so you have to make the most of what time you do get, because with a good dog it will fly in!
