Describe a good working Border

Recommended Posts

What would your defintion of a Good Border be...

Size, conformation, coat, temperament, working style

Part A. In your eyes a perfect border

Size =

Conformation =

Coat =

Temperament=

Working Style=

Part B. What faults do you see in the border...

as long as it's worker to worker it don't matter Yeah! we know that, but I'm asking what would be your perfect border, what do you look for when looking for the perfect dog ???

Some pics, and descriptions of dogs you've had in the past or now would be good ??

This is aimed at people who have or have had Border and are a fan of them.. the rest of you I'm starting a new thread for your particular breed...

why so many posts the simple anwer is one that goes to ground stays till dug to got a bit of sence and does not get bashed up ever time as dogs that dont spend more time in the kennel recovering must have a good nose and be able to find its quarry that should be your ideal terrier what ever the breed

so in your eyes all terriers are the same, same size, same colour, same working ability.. ??

Read the question it specifically states BORDER... that's why there are so many different threads started...

I started all the different ones hopefully to give an insight into different working styles of different terriers from different breeds.. FROM people who have genuine interests in the breed of their choice,, and hopefully help people who are thinking of owning whatever breed some information on them... ???

not to start world war three.... was that too much to ask... ?

Perhaps a mod could clean up the threads and get this back on track ????

I haven't seen any Borders worked, but from talking to boys that have, & one that still does, they all reckon that a decent Border is a hard Border. I was talking to a terrierman at a hunt meet last year who used to work them pre-ban, and he told me that a good border was very nearly as hard mouthed as a decent black dog.

I've had Borders for 13 years now and not seen one that would be my Ideal.

Dog out the back is a nice size and game enough for a young pup ( 8 month ) but nothing compared to my first one who would hunt anything, anywhere and not give an Inch but was too deep in the chest and a bit slow ,below, to ever make anything great.

I hope the lad out back proves me wrong, in fact I know I am being hard on him.

Back to what the Welsh bloke has ask'd, I reckon about 13 - 14", easily spanned with a hard jacket and looking balanced between head size and body.

Of a dog, I would expect, like the old dog I had, he would kill a Fox and not move away if he couldn't finish it, also I would expect him to draw a Fox.

Bitch, to just bay and stay for me, unless they have the size to 'close' with the enemy, fix bayonettes stuff.

Cosmetics, would be a nice short tail and either Blue & Tan ( thats black & tan for you none Border peasentry :tongue2: ) or a deep Red, not the pale brown/baby sh*t coloured fecker I've got

to me the most important thing in a working border must be the temperment, i once had a bitch that was so laid back when not working you would have thought it was senile but was a heller when working quarry and the harder the foe the more it tried.i think the old fashioned temperment is hard to find now they have become the latest fashion.she was a heller on cats as well and would kill them when ever the chance arrized. quite as a mouse with other dogs and would kennel up with anything.she was bred in 78 and lived 18 yrs and i still dug the odd fox when she was twelve.never had one since because i couldnt get hold of the right blood.we dug to her sister one day which lost all its toes on one front foot to its foe but didnt make a murmour just locked on and had to be prized of. top bitch as well for gameness but a bit over keen.

Why don't you f**k off back to fantasy island cos i've looked through your posts and have come to the conclusion that you're full of shit and i'd be on a pretty safe bet if i said you'd NEVER dug to a terrier..Prove me wrong and i'll happily apologise :whistling:

Top topics Swanseajack on all breeds of terriers

1 I like a smaller racy type terrier, here in Australia nearly all the show lines are way to big and bred by people who dont know the first thing re a hunting terrier. Also as we dont have access to many lines here we have to be careful on what we use, a bit of leg under them bitches 11 to 13 inches, dogs 12 to 15.

2 Conformation: straight legs and built to travell, not the much quoted bull about following the horses all day but the ability to hunt creeks and scrub and still have the stamina to work a den if and when required. A nice narrow chest especially in the dogs .

3 Good thick coat as we do a lot of hunting in creeks and muddy conditions so need to be able to handle the cold.

4 A very laid back temperment when not hunting, good to have about the place but to fire up when needed.

5 Work wise mostly bayers that stay well till dug, some of the dogs are paticularly hard but the bitches steadier.

Faults for us over here is the show fraternity breeding only to look at and not considering the true type re work and the pre occupatoion with the Otter head, a fox really couldn't care and he'll bite the head or nose whatever shape. One breeder recently told me that the short nose on their dogs was good for fox work ( not that this line would ever get out of the lounge) as if a fox bit it it would slip of the dogs head and not get hurt, more likely end up with a tooth in the skull and that would be it, so definatley a case for a longer nose!!!

Once again a top topic look forward to seeing the replies
