Help! Moderator damage...

Recommended Posts

OK, Out at Bisley today, shots wandered and then went off the page completely. Was zeroing so wasn't alarmed initially, after they left the target I checked the mod and it was loose. Got home and it looks like this:

If this were the barrel crown I know I'm screwed. But, given the much slower moving gas out of the front of a moderator, how much will this throw accuracy?

It had certainly seemed to settle down again, but I've seen the rifle do better in the past. Am I screwed? Do I need a new mod? I'm guessing yes, but hopefully I can get away with it!

I suppose it all depends on how acceptable the groups are Mr L.

How wide were they after you tightened the Mod?

You could always take the Mod off and shoot with Ear Protectors for the time being.

I would think it would throw accuracy a touch as the Gas isn't being thrown out equally.

Had you got the bushing screwed in, or how did this happen as the mod was off centre, did you not hear the ding so to speak of the bullet hitting the moderator?

i'd say it should be ok but it will always linger in the back of your mind about accuracy, due to the fact of the damage.....good luck with it.....

Could the hole be reamed out just enough so that it is symmetric again? It might be worth a go before you bin it...

:hmm: Would that not make it louder? Such as a mod for a larger calibre going on a smaller calibre rifle. With anything shooting related I would replace if not entirely happy to use it.

I`d say it possibly would John. Im no expert on mods, actually im no expert on anything

But i guess it also depends on how many baffles were damaged insiside the mod aswell.

I was thinking the same thing, something akin to re-crowning a barrel? :hmm: I'm not sure about the loudness, and if that's the last baffle I can see in the shot, it doesn't look damaged.

I take it you had to use FMJ at Bisley. If that happened with thin jacketed hunting ammo wouldn't it totally knacker the bullet and have the thing going anywhere? Mods arn't cheep but like Deker says i'd get a decent gunsmith to have a butchers at it before getting you Black n' Decker out. What mod is it out of curiosity?
