why would an all round lurcher need to take fox or course a hare [catch a hare yes] a lurcher is meant to provide food for the pot & to be an all rounder that is all it should be required to do catching all sorts of fur & feather [the fin is a bonus] coursing is sport & foxing is pest control therefor should not be included.jmo ATB Pritch

Back in the 70's there was a demand for fox fur for the fashion trade with good pelts fetching around £15 so poachers adjusted their needs accordingly, after the arse fell out of it people I spose seen foxes as a means of testing their dogs courage. It was also a very good method of pest control so it evolved from there I think. :victory:

theres plenty of top class all rounders out there a lot of people will argue the difference because they themselves have never seen a good dog .ive been lucky over the years because the people i have mixed with from a young age always had the best of lurchers and were the best of poachers day and night and believe me i know where ootys coming from weve probably walked similar paths my old dog duke is one of the best dogs ive ever seen and ive seen a few in my time in the day time this dog is top notch on any thing weather its marking hedges . holes a rabbit coming out of hedge forget it its dead 3 out 3 winter hares hes done it no end of times on big land and fields pull a catty out of your pocket get out in the grass he will find anything anywhere weather its fur or feather deer ive had hundreds over the years with him day and night foxes the same thing at night hes the same a regular 30 a night dog hares on the lamp he obliterates em when your ferreting hes a dream you dont speak to him jumps hedges 5 bar gates when im netting fish when im out in the water tying off hes gone out in the field keeping an eye out duke dont take prisoners when the heat comes on birds at night roosting in orchards you dont need torches and all that shit frightening birds up and making all sorts of noise he marks em in trees . i was approached a few years ago through a third party enquiring if i would appear in a film with duke for the warrener filming duke as the alround lurcher and me using the catty i declined some time later my black bitch i owned was stolen and appeared in the warreners latest dvd killing foxes but thats a different story i could go on and on but ive given a rough out line of this dog top grade allrounders do exist and contrary to popular belief breeding is every thing there is no substitute for it and the men who have the skills to produce these dogs are out there the trouble today is youngsters dont serve the apprenticeships and have had no mentors of note so have never had a bench mark set for them a couple of books by brian plummer and a second rate pup bred by joe down the road and the worlds theyre oyster

I think my next dog is gonna be called 'Duke'.............of all the stories i've heard, all the best dogs are called that!!!!

Dont wanna question you, but marking roosting birds, and "guarding" you whilst you're netting, all sounds impressive........... what lines have been bred from this, they'd be worth a bit i'd imagine................

I'm surprised the amount of arse kissing you've got to be honest!!! simple statements like obliterating hares on the lamp, usuallly bring all manner of slagging, but maybe 'Duke' only ran 'hard' lamped hares?????????

Its romantic all the same though, so i say hail "duke" the greatest "alrounder" that ever lived.............. :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

P.S........... Brookie, i aint calling your dog mate, just making an observation about dogs called DUKE!!!!!!!!!!

if youd read the post correctly youd see its rabbits i referred to 30 a night as for hares hes on tape doing 3 out 3 on the plains on a boxing day being gambled . i dont think there was any arse licking in any replies what it was was an appreciation from some quarters of men ive never met but men who i know have walked the walk and owned dogs of equal qualities i sincerely hope there is better all rounders about brcause i then know that at least in some places the future of the lurcher is safe because what ive seen in the last 25 years is the demise in the standard of this great breed of dog mainly by commercial breeding by amateurs and sold to amateurs any of you boys that doubt the qualities of this dog are quite welcome to spend a day or night in his company but please leave your locators and collars etc at home

nice one brookie, i came into running dogs about the seventies, things were different i never had anyone to look up to but i gleaned bits by listening, and goin out and doing it, with out the aid of bullshite books, i took most stuff with my first dog day and night, ferreting lamping ,and we neverhad permission, to many people now trying to get a name for themselves through big catches, back then the lads adapted their dogs for their needs, without breeding specialists.some lads i knew would take 20, 30 bunnies a night, or kill a few foxes, some lads only took bigger stuff, i can remeber buying a pup from a lad whose dog after being run on the hornypeckers wouldnt look at a rabbit, but he was bred from allrounders.

Fur&feather catching,long&gate-netting,ferreting,lamping,daytime coursing specialist?Guess whats rarer than the actual fabled canine itself?Someone with the skill, time, and patience to train the beast  I dont think your going to get one single person on here who will claim to have such a legend living in their kennels today :whistling:
dont no bout that but i lived off mine and my dogs wits for meny years,i still enjoy long netting gate netting, lamping, daytime.night time courseing, dogs even CAUGHT FISH!! dont see whats so hard bout training a dog to do all those things?its a matter of spending enough time with them and imo collie blood gives them a natural head start.and c,w,if a dog is stock broken it was f**k all good to me at one time, food is food, and we all need to eat,i had little need for money when i lived contently off the land travalling round the country with my lot :victory:

A fish catching dog...now that's something I would love to see mate...lol.....and as for being easy to train a dog to do these things...there's some folk in here would have trouble getting their dog's to sit...lol

i had a colliex that caught a flatfish before in a pool comical
