Malt 379
I didn't think there was a season for squizzers? If your referring to the winter, aren't they asleep most of the time? Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I didn't think there was a season for squizzers? If your referring to the winter, aren't they asleep most of the time? There is no season for grey squirrels in the UK. Defra and the Forestry Commission have been actively involved in a Grey Squirrel cull since February 2006, as have many other organisations and individuals. They sleep more in the winter and are generally less active (like much wildlife) but they do not hibernate! Do whatever you can, whenever you can, to rid this country of them!!! Quote Link to post

I think the 'war' is well and truly lost against them Deker mate. The best thing to do now would be to concentrate on the area's where they come into contact with our native reds, to try & halt their spread. There are loads of Greys here, and not enough people of a mind to do anything about it. Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
soo as the leaves are falling off the trees is a good time. you can see them better but that means they can see you better to. i find a cross point where they run along the trees sit out from it about 25 to 30 yards and still and they will pass you by. you can then pick them off as most the time they will stop. because they wont worry about you. its only if your under the tree and moving they keep running. i have shot a fair amount on my shoot with 12ftlb air and fac air. BBB 7
i shoot em on site aswell. but i think the best time to get em is mid autumn when they are busy gathering the nut crop. conkers, acorn's ect . they are easier to shoot and less wary when gathering nut's. i usualy go out early morning and plug em . best i'v done is 12 in one morning.. i love squirrel shootin. Pops 19
they out breed and out eat the native reds i immagine. gents prebait your area w an ear of dried corn (maize), then when you go to the area throw down another ear. also they are very active & not wary in late JAN & FEB when breeding males chasing each other in territory disputes. here in the USA we have a type of terrier developed just for hunting squirrels, raccoon & other animals that hide in trees. they are called feists. if the squirrel isn't on the ground they will trail them to the right tree and if it runs throught the tops will follow by sight until it stops running. when the rat runs to the other side of the tree it will go over there and chase it back around for you to shoot. very good type of dog. you could probably get the same work out of a smart terrier.
