I have never had much to do with terriers but i have a 4 year old border x which is used for ratting but nowt else. this may sound stupid but what other types of terrier work would I be able to do with him as hes not been trained much for the job.

With him being used for ratting he should have a good nose for bushing and if he's seen quarry going to ground then his instincts should make him follow, i know someone who's pure border didn't start working properly till it was 5 then it became a top working terrier

nope he tries to eat the poor old ferrets. its a shame really as when he doesnt come out for rats in the evening hes stuck being a 'house dog' all day. he will obviously be too fat to work right now but what sort of size as in height would be the limit for working under ground. I do a bit of ratting but would it be worth getting a smoker for just using one terrier? also is there anybody around bodmin area that works terriers and would be willing to show me the ropes? I may have to get out with the terrier man at the hunt kennels.

right. Im planning to do a spot of lamping rats tonight with the dog and as I have never tried this can someone give me some pointers on how to actually get the rats. the situation will be a fairly big chicken field with houses and metal feeders for the poultry. usually I just take the dog, lift the houses and catch the rats that are under. but I also know that when its quiet there are loads that hang about eating from the containers on there back legs. would the most efficient way of dealing with them be lamping? because I can not be sure that they will run back into the houses and not out of the field. we own the land and its only outside my front door so if it doesnt go to plan then it doesnt really matter but some help would be great

As for lamping them, block off as many exits as you can early on in evening. Help you along. Are you using the dog or air rifle? Never lamped for rats but surely would be similar to rabbits, Get a rat hunting video I got one that shows them lamping with 2 plummer types in a pig shed. Just find the rat shine the light and let dog run, take a bit of practice for the dog, but sure it would work.

Dunno bout limits for size of dog for earthwork, obviously as long as it can go down, for ferreting I like a smaller dog 10"tts but suppose it's each mans preference.
