Advice on choosing a scope...

Recommended Posts

Sorry to sound really (really) thick but apart from the (eg) 10 x magnification bit, can anyone please explain the numbers for different scopes?

I have just ordered a CZ style (16") in 22lr and will be mostly shooting rabbits day and night (with lamp) out to about 100 yards or so. Can any anyone suggest a decent set of numbers for good scope for this please?

I know everyone will say "spend as much as you can" but I'm going to need to keep it under £100 - any suggestions?

Thanks for any help,

Dan

Dan, Hopefully someone will come along and explain to you what the no's relate to better than I could.

If you are after a nice scope for not a lot of money take a look at the Nikko Sterling 4.5 - 16 x 50, they are around the £ 70 - 80 mark, they have really clear optics, I am sure you will get more recommendations but you can always ring your local gun shop and ask them their thoughts.

if it says 10x it means it will look 10 times closer than it realy is ..id go for a 4-16x56 and set the scope and rifle up so its hitting bang on at 65 or even 70 yrds on a carm day and if your any good you should be grouping about 1" to 1 1/2 at 70yrds with a slight wind ..a AGS /VIPER/ SCOPE WILL DO YOU WELL . TARGETS should look like this or better at 70yrds

Taking the above Nikko as an example 4.5 - 16 means that the scope's magnification will go from 4.5 to 16 . The x50 bit at the end is the objective lens which is the lens closest to the object being viewed. (ie the nearest to your muzzle) It is measured in millimetres in diameter. A larger objective lens allows more light to enter the scope.

But as with anything in the shooting world regarding gathering more light into your scope- the quality of the glass in the scope will make a huge difference - so it is really a matter of what you spend you get.

i have a 4x16x50 mtc on mine i find it perfect. i love the crosshair system and it works for me so that scope does me fine.

but i never go to 16 mag on it as i find 8 to 10 mag more then i need. if you shoot rabbits at full mag you shorten your field of view and you also see yourself shake more when on full mag which can be off putting.

MTC is OK for 22LR, further out I find the reticle too cluttered.

Deker has JSR scopes and all are <£100

Very good optics in them for the price.

Or MTC's Cobra is meant to be good, but I've never clapped eyes on one so I recommend the JSR line.

Don't get a cheap Nikko IMHO, mine is awful.

Or there's Hawke, which are hit and miss, mine was a reasonable one.

In terms of mag, 10x is fine for bunnies to 120 yards, so a 3.5-10 or something should be fine.

i use a niko sterling 3-9 x 40.on my 22lr The 3-9 is the magnification, this means i can adjust the magnification by turning a collar on the scope and the target can look either 3 or up to 9 times larger. the '40' means my scope has a lense diameter of 40mm which is not massive but not bad. i got this scope off ebay and it is quite good but i will probably be replacing this scope sometime in the future because the clarity of the glass is not brilliant and i hate the variable magnification. I shoot rabbits from around 40yds out to 100yds and for me, i think the variable mag is a load of nonsense.

i've got a 3-9x40 hawke sport-hd map. it cost like £54 from uttings and it's zeroed at 75yrds, the hawke ballistics program is a free download from there website and it works. i've used it to hit rabbits as far out as 112yrds.

it's a craking little scope for the money.
