craftycarper 0
This is a first for me so i thought i would post it if anyone else had the same problem and wanted a remedy.... Had my three chickens now for around just under three years and apart from the ongoing red mite problem that i have always dealt with, healthwise they have all been fine until today. This afternoon though i noticed one of the girls just sitting in a corner all lethargic, i went in and even picked her up with ease(most unusual) so i let them out their pen into the garden for a scratch around. The poorly one was a bit slow in coming out and i noticed that when she crapped it was a white slimey sticky discharge that trailed along behind her. After a quick read up diagnosis was egg bound...as i said earlier, never suffered this before...remedy...fill the sink up with warm water, dunk bird in for around five minutes...back end that is, gave a little massage and had a little feel through the vent with your finger (most guys should know how to do this ) & most girls mind you.... popped her back outside and on just checking the coop on locking it up for the night, theres one jelly eggy sitting in the bottom of it....hopefully sorted, will see in the morning

J Darcy 5,871
wellCC...those red mite are a swine. There are now drops you can buy for the birds. One drop two weeks apart on the nape of their neck and they will be ok. Of course, i cannot say if this is suitable for hens laying eggs for human consumption....but certainly worth trying. Ivomectin drops, i think Rob Harvey feeds sells them. Only cheap too...Hope the chicken is ok........JD

DUCKWING 302
WELL MATE , FOR RED MITE ... AS JD MENTIONED ..... IVOMECTIN EITHER THE DRENCH FOR THE NECKS OR IF YOU CAN GET THE INJECTABLE .... JUST SQUIRT HALF A CC DOWN THE BIRDS THROAT ....... NOTHING CAN LIVE ON THEM FOR 90 DAYS I WOULD TREAT THE CHOOK HOUSE WITH DURAMITEX AS WELL ......... SPRAY THE MIX ......... BUT BE CAREFUL , MASK AND GLOVES ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY ......... PAINT THE PERCHES ENDS WITH CREOSOTE AND OLD ENGINE OIL MIX AS WELL AS THE NEST BOXES BOTTOMS EGG BOUND , ............. WELL TO BE HONEST IT SOMETIMES WORKS AS DOES GIVING COD LIVER OIL AND A FEW OTHER METHODS ........ BUT DEPENDING HOW LONG SHES GONE WILL AFFECT HER CHANCES GOOD LUCK DUCKWING
craftycarper 0
the red mites are a pain in the arse, but reading on other fotums everyone suffers from them year in year out, i regularly strip out the coop, blow torch the little blighters in every nook & cranny, disinfect and scrub down inside and out, dust the birds regularly and also apply the dust to their bathing spots around the garden....but they always return after a month or so....
