What Caliber to use to learn to shoot big game ?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a Sauer 202 Take down. I go hunt in Africa next year for the first time. I want to do alot of practice before i go at the shooting range, what would be the best caliber to train with ? I need some training caliber that is cheap on bullet so i can shoot 1000's of them.

When i go actually hunt i would use another caliber, probably the .375H&H

Thanks for the help/your opinion

Perhaps so that we can get a better idea of what to say if you can tell us what game you plan to shoot - plains game or dangerous game like the 375 suggests??

Then if it is to be plains game, (looks like you will be in South Africa) if it were me I would look seriously at a 308 or 30-06

Personally my all-round Africa rifle is a 9.3x62 - too much gun for many of the smaller antelope maybe, but you never know what opportunity awaits around the next corner!

That said, I have a 30-06 which is a fantastic rifle, flat shooting and fortunately both Sako 180GR and Winchester 150GR bullets have the same point of impact through mine - flukey I know but really handy!

Finally though, I'm just about to scoot over to South Africa myself and for this flying visit I'll just be taking my old Ruger .308 with a 6x42 scope - old, trustworthy, reliable and enough gun for most everything you'll come across. In fact, all 3 PH's that I am visiting carry .308 as their preferred rifle too.

I shoot RWS 170GR softpoints and they certainly ruin the day of most everything I've shot at with it!

Hope this helps, but if you want any urther advce, or perhaps would just like to pick someone's brains a bit - feel free to PM me for some impartial advice without obligation - and remember to practise!
