R_Oldroyd 17
Hi all When making snares for hoop snaring i make them out of 4 strand because they get so tangled up on the legs of the hoops, so they get respun after use. My question to you is when making snares for use with tealers do you make them out 6 strand as i think they are easier to reset or 4 stands as they easier to make. Your thoughts regards Roger Edited September 3, 2008 by R_Oldroyd Quote Link to post

R_Oldroyd 17
Thanks Rolfe, And your reason why 6 stand everytime. it's worth knowing regards Roger Edited September 3, 2008 by R_Oldroyd Quote Link to post
Rolfe 2
Thanks Rolfe, And your reason why 6 stand everytime. it's worth knowing regards Roger I find them less likely to kink, they hold their shape better.......easier to re- tension (and hold the tension).......and longer lasting. IanB 0
I know everyones got their own opinion, but when I've been out with pegandgun snaring, he prefers the four strand snares, basically because there easy to work with when setting and reshaping there also quicker firing and tend to kill that bit better, but saying that you do get more snapped snares when fence or peg snaring with four strands, especially big winter rabbits....I know woodga uses six strand for all his snares.... I suppose its personal choice end of the day.. Quote Link to post
lurchers&fox 0
i use both, prefer 4 if i could only get hold of the one, but both have gave me good results Quote Link to post
Guest friedrice
i use both, prefer 4 if i could only get hold of the one, but both have gave me good results you know the thirty four you had last sunday mate were all them snares made out of four strand wire. Quote Link to post
The one 8,477
I go down to 4 strand snares during the summer but i reckon they trip faster for the younger rabbits and back up to 6 strands in the winter Quote Link to post
pegandgun 52
I use four strands for both hoop and bricks summer and winter and i used to use six strand all year for fences. i prefer four strand on pegged snares because when they are fully dulled off (weathered) they really are very hard to see especially when i use a painted tieler. After years of using four strand snares i find six stranded both thick and cumbersome by comparison. The only time i get a lot of brakes is on fences but i have devised a way to set four stranded on fences with vertually no brakes so its four stranded all the way for me......P@G Quote Link to post
mackem 26,385
Coincidence?I just got the boy to spin some 4-strand earlier(has to earn his pocket-money,credit-crunch and all that,no free-rides on the gravy-train),will try them later this evening Quote Link to post
Guest friedrice
my dad tells me one of his mates catch hares and large fox cubs in the four strand. how true could that be ?????? true or not ? Quote Link to post
R_Oldroyd 17
Thanks all for your input, I still like 4 strand snares over 6, they just seem too thick for my liking. I have caught well on 4 but seem to struggle to reshape them after they have caught so i just tend to replace the snares, I have a long section of motorway to do so i have been making a load up and have to say i don't like making six stand ones, but thats just me. mackem 26,385
Well,4-strand work and they hold adult bunnies in Hoops Quote Link to post
snareman 3
Well,4-strand work and they hold adult bunnies in Hoops old willie mac, showed me how to use the four strand snares 40 years ago, they are alright to use in the summer months when doing pest control, trust me there is nobody that has used them as extensively more than myself , but i don,t use them in the back end of the season for large winter rabbits, to tell you the truth i really don,t use them now, for the simple fact that ,you get to many broken snares ,and for the sake of two extra strands , i would rather have the rabbits held , than escape with a broken wire around their neck , there are a couple of different factors that affect the four strand snares , so a six strand firmly spun wire with a very light tension is just as good , and also closes very fast , and more humane, a lot of the old guys used them but i think it had a lot to do with being cost effective, and getting more wires from your drum of brass . pegandgun 52
my dad tells me one of his mates catch hares and large fox cubs in the four strand. how true could that be ?????? true or not ? Ive caught 100`s of hares in 4 strand snares and had few brakes as long as you use them with hoops or bricks and on fences with the method i have devised....P@G...... Remember those 4 stranded copper wires you gave me Snareman about 15 years ago.I used them for years on hoops and caught many 100`s of rabbits using them.I wouldnt mind a spool of that copper wire....P@G Quote Link to post
