Whippet aint no guard...

Recommended Posts

you could get a pup and raise it up to be your family protector but.. thats not going to save you or your wife next week.

i'll tell you what... i got Kaydee, my best dog, when she was over a year old. a co-worker found her scrounging in a hotel parking lot.... she was shy but came to them when they offered food. she was skin and bones and still lactating from a litter of pups.. collar was choking her too.

no one claimed her so they took her home. fattened her up and she made herself at home at the foot of the bed. my co-workers boyfriend got a shock when he came home late one night and this dog wouldnt let him in the bedroom.

you see he wasnt home enough, due to work, for her to think he needed to be in that room.... she had to go... I talked my husband in to bringing her home with us. my grandparents always had American Bulldogs but i was never allowed to have one of my own (my mom didnt like them!) So when my co-worker was giving this one away i leapt at the chance to have her!

She wasnt home a full 48 hours when she started guarding me and the house. my aunt and uncle didnt knock on the door, they just came right in and Kaydee backed them up into a corner and wouldnt let them move.... i was taking a nap when this happened.. didnt hear them come in, but i heard her!

she's proven herself many many times since then. She's old and broken down but dont tell her that.

I believe raising a puppy is a good idea but dont put all your stock into it being better than any other dog. if you take care of a dog and treat it well there is a high probability it will do the same for you.

at least thats been my experience.

I have a male Ridgeback and a female Boerboel ( South African Mastiff ) both are very friendly and great with kids and people we know or people in the house once introduced when we are there. The ridgeback is very vocal and protective around the house away from it he is very sociable with people and dogs. Anyone who does not know them would not try getting into the house. The bitch is 6 months and we have noticed that if they hear a noise outside he will run out growling to see who or what is there while she runs to us and sits infront of us whilst watching the doors to se if anyone is coming in. As a deterant but safe family/watch dog I reccomend either of these breeds.

The lurcher in my sig sounds a lot bigger and scarier than he is. He's never had to defend me or the house but he can be quite protective of myself and my daughter so I would hope he'd do the job if he had too.

Can be unnerving living on our own sometimes, especially with my next door neighbours!

my aunt and her daughter had a similar experience last week.... my cousins son was sick, so he was sleeping on the sofa, his mom was sitting up with him.... she heard a noise come from his bedroom and went to investigate... saw a man halfway inside the window... what did she do?

well she's my cousin after all... she cussed him for all he was worth and told him to stay there while she got her gun...

knowing he wouldnt do as he was told she, found her gun, and ran out the door to meet him around the house... her mom saw her leave with the gun so she got HER pistol... and these two crazy ass women chased this b*****d down the road, through a field, into the woods, all the while firing their guns in the air. at one point they heard him yell to a parked car at a stop light "They're shooting at me!!"

they used to have a good guard dog

but they sent him down the road to live with someone else.

i cant say pit bulls are good guards, some just arent, some are over the top... the one in the picture was over the top... he had ONE master... and to hell with anyone else. if you came in the door while his master was sleeping you had three seconds to get back outside.

I would say find an American Bulldog, but i'm biased lol

Feck me!!...I would'nt like that git red thing hanging off me..... :icon_eek:

i met that dog before i got my own bulldog. he impressed me a lot, needless to say.... but i think my own dog is better lol

he's a typical pit bull size and weight, about 55-60lbs.. i like a dog with a little bit more weight and height on them .. healthy weight i mean.

Scotsman, is that one of those Alanos?
