smudge1901 1 Posted August 31, 2008 Report Share Posted August 31, 2008 Went out for the first time in about a month only to get a frantic txt from my Mrs...Some knob was kicking the back door... Live in the middle of no where, so scared the crap out of here, not helped by the fact that the Mansion that was burnt down with everyone in it this week, is about a mile away from our house.... Sam, my faithful whippet spent the whole time looking at the back door wagging his bloody tail... At least she has now agreed to getting a guard dog at last, but not going to be easy to find I guess.. Anyone any ideas? Would be great to find a lurcher that had a bit about them, but Ive only had 1 lurcher who would guard. Also got to be cat proof. Maybe a staffy???? Got to get this one right....Want the idiot to have a surprise should they come kicking again.... Quote Link to post Share on other sites

My old Staf (jack RIP) was a great guard. Guess its down to individual dogs. I really wanted to get a second running dog, but not sure if I want 3 dogs, if you see what I meen... dogs-n-natives 1,182 Posted August 31, 2008 Report Share Posted August 31, 2008 The best guard dogs NEED to LOOK scarry, even if they wont takle someone, they will be bloody off putting to any strangers as they stand growling and barking at them. I would go for a large breed, like a doberman, mastiff or belgian or german shepard. As most of the time its the deterrent factor that does the job. This is a Mastiff/Rottweiler. BlueCoyote 0 Posted August 31, 2008 Report Share Posted August 31, 2008 my aunt and her daughter had a similar experience last week.... my cousins son was sick, so he was sleeping on the sofa, his mom was sitting up with him.... she heard a noise come from his bedroom and went to investigate... saw a man halfway inside the window... what did she do? well she's my cousin after all... she cussed him for all he was worth and told him to stay there while she got her gun... knowing he wouldnt do as he was told she, found her gun, and ran out the door to meet him around the house... her mom saw her leave with the gun so she got HER pistol... and these two crazy ass women chased this b*****d down the road, through a field, into the woods, all the while firing their guns in the air. at one point they heard him yell to a parked car at a stop light "They're shooting at me!!" they used to have a good guard dog but they sent him down the road to live with someone else. i cant say pit bulls are good guards, some just arent, some are over the top... the one in the picture was over the top... he had ONE master... and to hell with anyone else. if you came in the door while his master was sleeping you had three seconds to get back outside. mattydski 560 Posted August 31, 2008 Report Share Posted August 31, 2008 My collie wont let anyone in to the house unless me or the missus is here. Awsome amount of deep, rasping, big dog noise. All from a 11 year old boy.. Has a nasty look about him too. My misses used to be a debt collector, she took the collie to keep the money in the car safe.
