what is a proper foxing dog?

Recommended Posts

firstly it's no different, a good dog should be able to do it all, in any bloody country. secondly "i'm not your f*****g mate" i appriciate the apology. thirdly i actualy belive we've got somwhere we've all agreed they die fast by grabing the ribs but it's better for the dogs when they grab the neck. dont understand why you would actually want your dog to get hurt by a fox but whatever im sure you stab them in the face every know and agian just to see if there tough enough to take it as well

A proper foxing dog would have to be able to find its own foxes for a start and not have to be slipped or shown its quarry and run freely on its own.

your point is not relevant in the brittish isles. lurchers are sight hounds and built for work in the open. foxes here live underground and in deep cover that is why the brittish isles has so many hounds and terriers. dont make observations about hunting foxes in a country that is totally different to your own. i woudl nto try and tell an aussie or and american abiut how to hunt in there country in fact i dont even know hunting in england which differs from ireland where i am from.

Maybe Adam your point would be better put forward under a new thread called 50% foxing dogs for people who assume everything in life rather than under the heading of proper fox dogs. Tally ho and best of luck.

b.f. must be thinking day time, although i know dog thats can ute finding like a pig dog would at night if its slow driving and another two that would be capable given the chance.

back to the original topic i think a proper fox dog should be able to find a fox in the day in any terrian and catch it, mark a den, work with terriers, never fight dogs, draw well, listen 100%, jump fences and on or off the ute, follow the beam, be absolutly silent as you whistle a fox in as it watches it, kill with minimal damage (naturaly) and most importantly never give up. and irronically it should also take anything else you put it on

that to me is a proper fox dog it has to be able to do it all as well as not having bad habits at home or when away

AH SOMEONE WITH HIGH ENOUGH STANDARDS TO MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO FIND A SUITABLE DOG  MUST HAVE SOME FAILURES WHO DON T TICK ALL THE BOXES.

BROTHER FOX I THINK ADAM OBVIOUSELY HAS ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO REALISE THAT YOUS LADS ARE BEING A BIT DAFTIN ALL YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF A FOX DOG.

WE DON T HAVE MILES OF FLAT PLAIN TO CHASE IN UTES AND POP THE DOGS OUT LAST MINUTE.IF WE DID WE WOULD NT NEED COVER DOGS.

WHATS UP WITH THE CUTTING THE DOGS FACE JIBE?BIT HARSH TO ACCUSE SOME FELLA OF THAT CRAP.

OH ALLGAME ONE LAST QUESTION.WHAT DOES TAKING OTHER QUARRY HAVE TO DO WITH MAKING IT A FOX DOG?THINK YOU POSTED ON THE WRONG THREAD SHOULD OF BEEN "PERFECT DOGS THAT WE KEEP IN AUSTRALIA"

thats not much to ask of a dog iv had plenty, and so have my mates, that 'tick' all the boxes so to speack it's not easy to get like that but it's far from asking to much. also had heaps that are lacking and arnt sutible the more you turn over the more chances you've got of finding a good one, i'v had heaps of s**t dogs aswell who hasnt? have every dog of yours been up to your expectaions? proberly you dont seem to have any other wise you would have siad so.

and as for adam he'd only kept a dog if it kills by the chest hows that for asking to much? and the stabbing thing was an insult i didnt mean it literaly but when a fox grabs a dog i see it as the equvitant to a knife getting stuck in them iv seen them put dents in a shovels why do you think the dogs squels when biten? why would you want fox teeth in your dogs nose thats not fair on the dogs at all i wish my dogs were never biten but it's apart of it. id prefer a smart dog then a tough dog

and it just so happens im yet to meet a good fox dog that wont hold it's own agiast any game, if they can catch fox the can catch rabbits and if they can kill fox they can take roos and if they can take roos they can hold pigs to a degree and deer

also more then half my huntings done walking spotlighting and in the terrier work and if we see a fox from the ute it could be as many as 400 meters from us and the dogs really have to be flat out from the word go often having to jump four or five fences and go out of the light to make a kill it's rare we get the chance to run them down and let the dogs out on the last minute if thats all we did id just use a shoot gun.

how bout you explain to me whata proper fox dog is?

if i was talking about the perfect fox dog i dont belive there is one dog that can claim that but i do believe the perfect team of dogs is possible

my expectaions for a perfect dog is much higher and id hardly be able to explane it. what i ask is for simply a good dog or atleast what i think a good dog is

a red fox is a red fox dosent matter what country it's in it's still a fox, making a fox dog a fox dog no matter what counrty it lives in do you think that if i ran my dogs in england they would be any less and catch a lower precentage. for some reason you seem to think that since iv had different experiences to you somehow means that i cant know anything if anything you should realive i know different things and thats why for some reason you think the most simple of expectaions of a dog is impossble when there more then achivable and many poms would have achieved what i ask of my dogs. iv also never cliamed that i know how other dogs should be iv just siad about my experiences with dogs and what i expect of a dog, and that i dont understand why you'd willing trade the time it takes to kill a fox with pain to the dog. and unless im mistaken many english people also belive your wrong and this was well before i said anything. making this a australia vs english thing is stuipd this is a right way verus a wrong way to do things topic. shutting out other poeples sugestions simply because im foriegn to you shows nothing but your ignorance and unwillingness to learn or improve. you seem to love to talk and hate to listen. i have heaps to learn but the difference is is im willing to

I have to agree with this statement. I dont do hundreds of foxs but my dogs do a fair bit single handed and doubled up.

My dogs must mark an earth as i find it a big help having a lurcher running up ahead checking earths and cover. A good nose is important to me and my 5/8 3/8 bull x has 1.

Once ive dug down the dog has to be able to pull it out an kill it quick. Same as on the lamp.

I like a dog to be well behaved, not to a very high standard but you know the basics.

To me this is a good fox dog.

Please note all the above is pre ban obviosly.

YIS

Stan.

THERE IS NO COMPARISON BETWEEN DOGS IN AUSTRALIA AND DOGS IN IRELAND. LIKE SPIFF SAID START A THREAD ON THE PERFECT AUSTRALIAN LURCHER.

IT IS A TYPICAL EXAMPLE OF AUSTRALIAN ARROGANCE TO THINK THAT YOU KNOW BETTER ABOUT HOW DOGS SHOULD BE ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE WOLRD.

Here my man your not one to talk about arrogance....are you not the one who thinks your dog is superior to dogs that go for throat holds....people in glass houses and all that matey! :whistling:

most dogs have different styles.some can take a hold anywhere and never lose its grip, thats what i want.grip changing for a sofetr hold?????Fox can take advantage of a second or 2.Some dogs can kill 100s and take little stick.Others can kill 100s and don t mind whats eating at them.

Grip changers i have my doubts about as ive seen to many foxes get away with this behaviour.OMO

I think the wheaten x has a problem, not with gameness,as the best fox dog i seen was a half bred, but i find they don t shake. The bullx bites hard and shakes hard ,in my experience.Quicker kill.

Just to add Adam doesn t come across as arrogant to me,just knows what he wants doesn t make him arrogant.

arrogance (n.) overbearing pride evidenced by a superior manner toward inferiors .....yip just about sums him up!

Thinking your dog is better than others because of the way it grips its prey without seeing these other dogs work smacks of arrogance!
