9 month old Whippet

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Out with my 9 month old whippet last night when I spot a sitter, still new to this so thought it was a rabbit, albeit a large big eared rabbit. Got to within 20 yrds and slipped him when it bolted. During the long twisting turning chase, I am thinking this rabbit is very agile, never seen a rabbit jump 3ft in the air before. After 2-3 minutes of frantic chasing the big eared bunny began to tire and as soon as my dog hit it I new for sure what it was. I have never seen one before, let alone heard the noise they make when caught.

Now my boy will be nine months old in 2 weeks and has had quite a few rabbits already. I bought a pedigree and was worried he may not be up to the job, but I think my concerns were unjustified.

He is 20 inches at the moment, I am hoping he will get another inch or two, when do whippets usually reach full height? How comon is it for them to catch “large bunniesâ€, I always thought this was the Saluki and Grey domain?

This is my first post, I have been avidly reading through the wealth of information on here, thanks to everyone I have learned a lot already!!

its very possible mate , but hare coursing isnt just for the Sal/Grey's but they seem to be the best cross for this job epecially daytime. whippets usually reac around 20 inches mate youres could possibly make 21 tts.but experienced whippet men will tell you better.

weve got a little 5/6 month old and when i take it for walkys it winds me up .but then again it is nose to the ground looking over every inch of ground following rabbit scent.now i dont no where this has come from or wether its in her make up.she has picked up a couple of mixi not much but not bad for a dog not in training yet.so i can see what your saying in your story.and i dont think 9 month is too early to introduce a dog to qaurry. :thumbs:

My boy is retreiving live to hand as well, although he is reluctant to let go when he gets to me. The only other habit I want to break is him running down the light. Apart from that i cant complain, hes doing great. Any advise on helping with those two issues would be welcome.

Thanks

most dogs run down the light,just do some more dummy training with the dog with rabbit skin round the dummy,rember the dogs a baby yet,no hurry,this winter is or should be a learning season,dont be to keen to over run your dog.a lot of top lurcher men would say the dog shouldnt see a rabbit till a year old,its easy to ruin a dog in its early days,you have 10 years to work it yet, :victory:

:hmm: 2 / 3 mins with a 9month whippit on big ears, :no::icon_eek::nono:

Spot on ooty :yes:

No running dog should be running at large quarry let alone rabbits at 10 months of age.Physically and mentally the dog will be far from mature,and could be injured or ruined by starting t so early.My beddyxwhippet was out ferreting with me,and catching bolters at 7 monthsold,but i never let her run on open ground till she was over a year old.Tale your time and let the pup be a pup. :thumbs:
