Hounds, huntsmen and best days.

Recommended Posts

I hunt a Basset, Beagle X tekel and some little Hound crosses, with another basset pup on the way and I'm having the fun of my life. Barry Tod Hunter is a great huntsman and one of the very beast days hunting I ever had was when trying to keep up with him. Another favourite huntsman of mine has got to be David Jukes from the Zetland Hunt. Regards warren

I've been on the recieving end of this little pack and they are something else................... :notworthy:

What about the fell hound where do they rank with yous??

I've only had a day out with Penine and a day with Conniston and unfortunately there wasn't a lot doing so I never got to see the hounds really doing the biz but I bet it is great when they get going but that's hunting isn't it? there are never any guarantees I will say the followers and staff were second to none though real hunting people.

No one's mentioned the American Foxhound yet, good hounds with lovely deep voices and deep scenting. They can be very strong minded so I know a lot of huntsmen don't like them, as they can spend their first two seasons rioting! However, I don't much care for the look of them, I like the look of the Welsh and the old English.

I think it was desertdog who said he liked those early cubbing mornings and I'm right with you on that one! You only get the real die hards out that early, no audience and it has to be the most wonderful time of day to be out hunting. I think I also remember it so fondly as it was then, that the Master used to have me whip in a bit, and I absolutely loved that!! The mix of utter terror at making a mistake, and sheer delight, god what a fantastic feeling! The later the mornings started the more would come out so I would be relagated to general dogs body again, whilst someone important did the whipping in! Very, very happy days...

I can remember lots of days, coming home thinking, "that was the best ever". Mostly they would consist of no bollockings, a lot of port, riding one of my favourites, and watching hounds scream hot on Charlie's tail. As Leveller said, I've had good days out hunting with huntsmen I abhorred, and bad days follwing huntsmen I worshipped, it's all there.
