BlueCoyote 0
i got into an argument with an attack dog trainer about the very same comment..... and it was about those Ovcharka's. he was putting down the dog handler's methods in a youtube video, and saying the dog was a wuss and was too defensive..... i asked him if he would be willing to up to that dog without his bite suit on and he told me i wouldnt know a good guard dog if it bit me in the arm pit.. He was probably upset you called him an "attack dog trainer" BC, makes them sound like knuckle draggers i call him that now because he IS a knuckle dragger

Simoman 110
gnasher they are not recognised by the KC and there is no height/weight guidance for the standard. They were originally a livestock guardian breed but in recent years have been used as sentry/patrol dogs in Russia and the eastern block countries. I worry about what will happen when they become popular here, from what I have been told they are a tad "touchy" with strangers................
gnasher16 30,591
Thanks pal...with that big fluffy coat im not sure they look " hard enough " for todays wannabe toughies.....but im sure a few reported attacks in the papers and media frenzy for another dangerous breed will add to the appeal... If theres no height/weight limit id like to see how a 50 lber stacks up for power with a 50 lb pit bull.....its easy to make a 150 lb dog look powerful ...that said, the russians dont do things by halves so must be something there ! BlueCoyote 0
in the other dog forum i go to there was a lady who owned a pack of these Ovcharka dogs. she's dead now, sad to say, so i cant ask her any questions about living with them. i think they are mostly hair and bulk.... they're related to the Great Pyrenees and Mareemas(sp), so if you;ve ever met a couple of those in person thats an indication of what these must be like. i'm sure some of them are more fat or fluffy than they are muscle but that would depend on how they're kept, like any other breed. either way i wont be going onto someones property with one of those suckers on the loose..... valentino 0
ive seen afew caucasian ovcharkas,.....infact been in they yard and home of them and they didnt bother me at all... infact the bitches in the house seemed to me like any other family dog and i even went into the room with the week old pups with ne bother,..... now when i was show the father to the pups, i must admit i sh#t me pants,....on appearance and presence,,,,but in all honestly the dog was well mannered and just got on with his buisness.... ive been to places with other 'serious' guard dogs were you cant get near them without them 'wanting abit' so imo, these ovcharkas didnt appear to be as nasty as ive read..........but would i tempt breaking in where one was.......not a chance....im sure these dogs are more than capable and like any other dog they should not be in the wrong hands...... ive only seen afew so i cant give a full account of how they are overall,,,,but this is how i found them valentino
BlueCoyote 0
those were probably well socialised which is a good thing, and would have probably eaten your ass if you tried to do something to the owner! i've seen dogs walk you through the house and wag their tails the whole time, but the moment you act "funny" their attitude changes. my brother had a German Shepherd that wouldnt bother you as long as you came in through the back gate... but if you tried to go out into the backyard via the house... he wouldnt let you out the door. he would stand there and smile at you through the sliding doors. even with my bulldog bitch. she'll often greet anyone in a friendly manner.. she seems to be a different dog all together if i am at home alone. there have been a few times when someone acted in a manner she didnt agree with. my aunt for example... instead of telling ME she didnt want the dog near her(dog just wanted to be friendly and be petted) my aunt just opened her eyes wide and glared at the dog and leaned in toward her.... Kaydee went from happy dog to "i'm gonna rip your face off"dog... Other times if people crowd or get to close to me she'll try to back them off.. she doesnt do that with my husband though lol she's a big dumb puppy with him! not sure if she is more possessive over me than him, or if she thinks i cant take care of myself..... either way from her i've learned never to trust any dog that starts out happy to see you.. thats where it seems a lot of people get the shock of a lifetime when their dog "suddenly attacks without warning" .... there's always a warning, some breeds just dont go through a whole gallery of warning signs. with my dog i can see her body language change.... ears tail stiffen and she focuses on her "target" ... after that i get a leash on her.
