Advice for black lab housing.

Recommended Posts

I have purchased an 8 week old black lab bitch and need advice on some housing. My last 4 dogs have been lurchers and this is my first lab. I have a 20' by 8' run with a good kennel and a 100' by 20 ' garden. Is it ok for her to live outside on her own at this age? She currently is the only dog I have. She is from working parents. Any advice would be gratefull. I intend to train her for use with my air rifle . Thanks Spud.

Yes it may be advisable to place a radio in the kennel background noise, a box for sleeping in and most important make it chew proof..

If this is your first lab you will be very surprised how destructive they can be ...good luck Steve

The dog has lived outside for all of its short life. I am more concerned at it being on its own after coming from a litter of 10. Ive read on some other sites that they dont like a solitary life.

All depends how much contact it will have during the day .It will miss its siblings bound too.. noise and commotion fighting playing...

Thats why i said a radio might be of help . .. Will the pup be alone Ie will it not have any human contact during the day. if you are at work for example and noone is in the house ?If you have a partner and they are in the house during the day will they take it out and play with it? or bring it into the house..As long as there is socialisation of the pup and the pup is happy and when it is out it has time to be a pup then it will adapt.Just expect it to be a little bit wary and upset in its first couple of nights..

I hope this is of help

is it better to keep a working dog outside? i was just wandering cos im thinking about getting one when i move to use on shoots

I would house outside, to be honest they like their own space. It is easier for you to bond with them, instead of every other person in the household and it gives you an excuse to get out of the house  .
