Guest SPIFF
THIS IS A QUESTION FOR ALL WORKING TERRIER KEEPERS BREEDERS WORKERS.THE ANIMALS WE HAVE CURRENTLY, WHEREEVER YOUR FROM, HAVE BEEN INHERITED BY YOU FROM MEN WITH THE SAME INTEREST AS OURSELVES.THEY HAVE ACHIEVED THE BREEDING OF AN EXCELLANT ANIMAL CAPABLE OF DOING A JOB WHICH OUTSTANDS US ALL MOST TIMES WE WORK THEM. AS CUSTODIANS OF THESE TERRIERS I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ALL WHO FIT THE ABOVE CATEGORY. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? 1.IS IT WORKER TO WORKER?[REGARDLESS OF EACH DOGS FAMILY BACKROUND] 2.IS IT WORKER TO WORKER,PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO EACH DOGS FAMILY HISTORY,IE PRODUCING CAPABILITIES,COLOUR BREED ETC. 3.IS IT LINE/INBREEDING,THEN OUTCROSSING TO SCATTERBRED WORKERS? 4.IS IT LINE/INBREEDING ,THEN OUT CROSSING TO SIMILAR CLOSE BRED ALTHOUGH DIFFERENT LINES? 5.OR IS IT BLOOD/HISTORY ALONE REGARDLESS OF INDIVIDUAL DOGS WORKING CAPABILITIES? OldNog 432
i got me last terrier last year so im certainly no expert but to me all that matters is if the dog works, therefore surely (well my opiniion) is worker to worker is all that should count Quote Link to post

harddigging 42
worker to worker all the way if you can keep the blood tight so be it if not just be sure you only breed from the best. theres anougth shite out there bred from untested dogs than most care to think off. so as long as they work and are above average there worth a litter to replenish the kennels Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
For my part it is linebreeding to proven stock ,stuff that has thrown its fair share of workers with mininum waste and yes ,they are out there .Line breeding is misunderstood by a lot of people and used to promote the sale of too many dogs every year .Line breeding IS NOT the continuous inbreeding of stock as some would have you believe and has been the ruination of many a good line .Inbreeding eventually goes stale .Line breeding requires the introduction of RELATED blood at chosen intervals but thats another topic . All linebreeds benifit from the introduction of unrelated outcross to introduce new vigour but that is also another topic . Play around with any old cross to any old cross if you like but in my experience of other lads ,a lot of time is wasted if not this year ,then future matings as god knows what you will throw .The terrier lads gone by did not spend years of their lives creating lines for nothing and dont forget that its not the creator who names the line its subsequent generations of lads that attribute a good line to one single man .This is not based on hearsay or books but from personal experience of terriers over 25 years ,the choice is yours but try to think about the future as much as today .
