1st day out

Recommended Posts

Managed to get out ferreting today, took two ferrets, my longnet and my aging cocker spaniel (i was going to take the teckel cross, then had a rethink-dont know why)

anyway started at the landowners request on a log pile/log shed, got the first rabbit from here, in the farmhouse garden. straight into the longnet after about 40minutes of being chased round the logs, i tried to locate the ferrets and the bleeper wasn't working correctly  anyway after taking it appart, it was the revamped metal wheel that Robw gave me touching a wire that had moved and creating a shortcircuit, wire bent back working perfectly now, i need to tape the battery in to stop it knocking the wire again!

i then moved on down the field, the bottom of the field a large open warren and i start to run the longnet out, sat in a clump of thick grass was a rabbit, i tried to jump on it and missed, the rabbit took off accross the field, poppy the old fat and hairy cocker spainel took off after it!

anyway after a few turns, the rabbit slows to try and get under a wire fence, and she struck!

her first rabbit caught in the open! :notworthy: who needs a lurcher!

after this warren i had my lunch and the ferrets and dog had a drink of water, i have a 3 compartment ferret box that i got from timberproduct's, the two end compartments had the ferrets and the middle one had my sandwiches, crisps, cheese and onion pasty, and the bottle of water :D

third warren, bolted 6 rabbits, 4 straight into the net, 1 managed to wriggle free due to it being only small and me being too fat and slow :laughbounce2: the 6th rabbit bolted saw me and ran back below, i could hear the squeal immediately both ferrets had nailed it, just out of reach, 1 foot dug and rabbit removed

4th warren, a quick 3 rabbits, the last two bolted at the same time and i had to be quick breaking one neck and throwing myself on the 2nd!

Well done mate is that a quick set?..

No mate thats a traditional set longnet!

hazel wands and end pins!

the one time i was out witha lad with a 100 yard quikset......i was quicker running mine out and putting the wands in :tongue2: and i find the traditional longnet better when ferretinga s you can put the wands nearer or further apart depending on the terrain/grass/crops/debris/rabbit runs etc........

glad you all enjoyed the post as much as i enjoyed being out :victory:
