Guest JohnGalway
So I'm wondering about something. Besides the fact it's enjoyable - let's face it we wouldn't go shooting if we didn't enjoy it - do you pay to be let control vermin (be it rabbits, rats, foxes, pigeons or whatever), does the farmer/owner pay you?, do you do a work for work trade? Or is it simply a case of knocking on the door, getting permission, and nothing more is exchanged either way I've been paid for one job - ever, never looked for or wanted money for any call. I refused the money many times but it was becoming clear the farmer would take offence if I didn't accept it. So I donated it to the local hospice and everyone was happy. Just wondering how it works with everyone else... Quote Link to post

Just wondering how it works with everyone else... my sport / work is varied... im a member in a syndicate that holds approx 600 acres of land, & i have permission on a number of farms with a total of 1500acres approx, i see this land as my sporting permission, but it also leads onto paying customers... i have regular customers on domestic & commercial properties with control for rabbits, moles, rodents, wasps, ect with new work & contract coming in regurlary which im happy with as ive only started to trade recently... rich Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Im not sure what to put John. I control vermin as part of the Job of being a Keeper. So In some ways I get paid for it, in others , no money is dealt with for Vermin Control. Just Part of it. Quote Link to post
tonetone 0
i cant really click a vote button John, im a farmer and i control vermin to protect livestock and crops. I cant honestly say i enjoy shooting rabbits or rooks/pigeons that are eating my crops but i need to do it. However, i get great satisfaction in revenge, when i manage to shoot a hoodie crow thats pecked a lambs eyes out. i would go and shoot vermin for somebody else but only if i was paid. cheers tone Quote Link to post

wag 13
well i also as a part time keeper get paid for what i do on the farm , i also do all the vermin control in my area which benefits our shoot anyway, mostly for the local farmers, some pay me, i never ask for money . i ask some times for a bit of duck shooting because thats my main passion or stalking instead of payment which all farmers are very happy to do so. i have gained alot of permmission through word of mouth also having a good reputation helps, i now have many thousands of acres through it. bumble 2
Myself and a mate have about 2000 acres for vermin control. Its free, but on ocasion we`ve helped out on farms when asked. Rabbits pigeon, fox, crows. Loads of crows around here this year, and thats mostly what people want shot at the moment. I work shifts and can turn out at odd times to sort things out, farmers have my number to call, so i put myself out a fair bit, but hey its free shooting. Quote Link to post

SNAP SHOT 194
Do the odd job here and there for them, get paid with a bag of lamb now and again, but never look for money, Always willing to help and treat the land with utmost respect, and it shows, my deer permission went from 120 acres last year to nearly 1100 acres this year. So it all good........ Quote Link to post
Country Life 0
I have a number of farms I shoot over, I aquired these permisions through cold calling, I will do the odd bit of work for them in return (Electrician) but as yet I have not been asked, however come Xmas I will treat them all with a bottle of the hard stuff, as a gesture of good will and a thank you.
