Dogs claws

I have attempted to trim the dogs claws today, some are white & some are black, the white ones are easy to cut through, but the darker ones are a bugger, is it just me who finds the darker claws harder to cut, i am more aware of how much i cut as i cant see the quick so perhaps thats the problem

i have exactly the same problem and the dog starts to get nervous now cos ive cut too short before so ive actually taken to filing them down with some rough sand paper, the dog prefers it, i find it more controlled about how much i take off and it gives something else for our lass to take the piss out of me about. It does take longer but his claws are the best theyve been in ages

To be honest i had thought of using a foot file i picked up for a quid a few weeks back , i may use that instead, i got bigger clippers this afternoon the guillotine type & its easy enough to do , just wary of the dark claws

i have some with gaurd kay called millersforge cost a 4.50 from a farm shop you no that do animal feeds but you cant hurt the dog just to take the ends of .try not to over worry

If you walk the dog first in the dewy grass or after a bath the claws are much softer so there is less chance of them splitting or that nasty crunch that will put some of them off. To avoid hitting the quick you can just literally take the tip off the claws, this will cause the quick to retract higher up the claw, a week later you can take more off. That might make you feel happier about cutting the black claws. Also, the guilotine type clippers are much more effecient, seem to blunt less and are a cleaner, easier chop, rather than some others. Sounds like a bath is a regular thing for you dog

 

Agree with you softening the claws first, mind you my Meg runs a mile soon as the clippers come out and I'll be lucky to trim just one claw. I run her on the beach/sands that sorts 'em

to cut dark claws soak the foot in wark water put a torch behind the nail and you will be able to see the quick .........

Ok thanks for the advice i will soak her paws then & give that a try

i use an electric file , takes a while for the dog to get used to it but easier on dark claws, also those that are a real pain i use a brick and hold the foot and nail then scrape it that way?

glad im not the only one that uses different ways on there claws, an electric file i tried an electric sander but he didnt like the vibrations so it looks like ill stick with the sanding block,

the reason i tried this was because when i was cutting the nails every other week the quick wasnt shrinking back enough and so was catching it making it bleed even though the claws were still long and a dog thats nervous of the clippers

Errrrr....no!! Only when it's rolled in something disgusting...like yesterday.

The two older ones have figured out - rolling in shit = bath. The pup hasn't got there yet!

Don't do their claws either, except dew claws, as they don't need it. But I am a dog groomer....so....

I have managed to take off the ends on all the claws , she hasnt objected to me doing this, i think i will file them a little bit as theres a couple of the darker ones that are still a little bit long

 

I havent touched the dew claws should they be touched at all ?
