DISSAPOINTMENT

Went out yesterday morning to get a dig to start the season,knew of a earth to try not to far from home,anyway got there and it was showing signs of use and both young dogs keen to have a look,so i collared the young bitch up and let her go flew to ground couple of mins then came out and went down a different hole,after a while with my head down the hole i heard her connect so i give her a little while to settle,then had a scan about with the b+f got a mark at 2.2metres so i gave the ground a few whacks with the shovel they were still there so started digging when i was about half way down i looked behind me for some reason and just as i did the bitch emerged shook herself then flew back to ground,gave it a bit more time then had a scan about again,got a mark so i stuck my ear to the ground and i could hear her on again,just about to put the shovel to the ground and out she popped again,i was a bit pissed of so i grabbed her,took the collar of and put it on the young dog he went to ground,in one hole out another,i thought about putting the bitch back in but decided to call it a day so i back filled the hole id started to dig and came home,

I didnt think the bitch would do that so i was a bit gutted,to be fair and im not making excuses but she had two digs end of last season no more than three feet and she stayed alright so she,ll have a few more chances then see whats what,the young dog hadnt been dug to but hopefully ill get some from him this season just wished id had my lod dog with me.

its a young dog mate give it time its still cottoning on to the crack of he,ll dig me out if i stop here im sure i twill come good some dogs will go to ground kick straight into gear and stay all day some wont give her time by the end of the season try her in a deep ish spot give her the experience and confidence of a few easy ones to build her up and she will stop all week i think you might just be expecting to much of a young en slowly slowly catchy foxy so they say best of luck and with a bit of luck by the end of the season she will be digging the deepest of spots with ease

If you saw how my young terriers behave to begin with you wouldn't give them the time of day! Theyr'e in and out of the holes like bloody ping pong balls, and yes, it can be a pain as the fox will keep moving about: I often end up sticking a seasoned dog in if the fox won't bolt or we'd be there all night! LOL

It can take them an age to really get going, but once they do they'll be working until they're 8, 9 even 10 years old, barring horrible accidents of course, and once they do cotton on to the fact that they'll be dug to you won't see them until you break through.

 

2 digs last season is nothing at all: foxes can be up on ledges dishing out punishment, round corners doing the same: its all testing stuff to a young dog to begin with, and some need a lot longer to get their confidence.

took my wee russell bitch out for her first dig a couple of weeks ago... she behaved the same way when i started to dig but the ground was hard and she probably thought "what the feck was all this banging about"??? she may even have thought it was a kinda punishment for doin something wrong... i didnt put her back in either because i had the feeling i was doing more harm than good so i have another place eyed out for her where the ground is a bit softer...

im sure time will make them come straight. Entering my bitch this year hopefully!!
