Guest Ditch_Shitter
Interesting thread I must say; Etomology, dialect and slang has always found a soft spot with me. Few observations from the above ~ pretty much at random and uncited; Horse Flys, in Eire, are called " Clags ". Maybe that's my take on the accent with which the word's been pronounced to me? I wonder if there's a celtic root there? " Dunnock " is actually the correct name for the 'Hedge Sparrow'. Modern field guides and lists giving this as the name. " Peewit ", like Green Plover, is a more 'unofficial', yet quite nationally acceptable term for the Lapwing. " Jasper ", for a wasp, is a term I found used in Sussex during my earliest teens, funnily enough. As wasps are scientifically listed as of the genes Vespa, I thought the conection obvious. But some area knows Rats by that name? Well, I'll be f*cked! Now I don't know quite what to think. " Pricklyhotchi " too caught me eye. " Hotchiwitchi " being the Romani word for a hedgehog. One could easily be led to assume that Hotchi might mean 'Pig'. But the Roma word for Pig is something entirely different. 'Cushat', was it, for Woodpigeon? Bloody hell! I haven't come across that name ~ or anything like it ~ since reading Very old books! Amazing to think the term still persists in usage into this day and age! For me though, the humble woodlice get's my vote. " Wood Pig " ? Brilliant!
OldTrapCollector 377
Most of my own diction of colloquial words are Romany derived ones as are a lot of the above as already pointed out - a few others I remember from my youth are ~ Moudie - Mole Spog - Sparrow Moggie - Moorhen I wonder how far back the 'traditional names' of Reynard, Puss, Brock, Coney, Leviathan etc go? I would imagine Olde Englishe but the origins are more sketchy. All very interesting I have to admit. OTC
