after a spell of bringing her on nicely with lamp and rifle she seemed keen as mustard but last night i gave her a big cub to deal with (N. IRELAND) and to put it nicely she crapped herself... it was a bit disappointing but i'll keep at her for a while longer and see how she fairs... maybe double her up a time or two?? i was told she was 2 when i got her but i think she's a bit older... i was hopin to cross her to a wheaten/grey next year or so but if she aint cutting the biscuit she might be up for rehoming if anyone wants a lamping/coursing dog??? if foxes aint your thing then i'd expect a permanent home because she's fairly useful on hare and rabbit... she's still a bit green on the lamp but her recall is good and she's easy enough to work with... jumps into the boot of a car on command and all that...

i think maybe with the fox she would be looking at size ie dog figure

that most are 100% around most of the time ,their prey is to smaller qaurry

id definetly double it up on the first one :victory:

i wouldnt say that greyhounds prey drive is just to the smaller quarry i have 2 that are game as on any quarry all the larger and all the sharp tooth so maybe the dog just hasnt got it in it mate. but like you said give it another chance.

she's runnin round the back there somewhere..

Mostly old long ears, I am at. But within my experience, a dog that age will not be wedded to that type of quarry no matter what you do! Also that land looks familar with your greyhound in it, is that beside a college?

na mate, thats the home place...

thanks for the replies folks, i'll keep at her a while yet and see what happens but, at the start, i thought i was onto something when she was ragging shot foxes because she showed alot of venom but this time her venom was absent... she should be famialiar with that ground by now because she's been there 4 or 5 times before...

i understand what you mean adam and i know plenty who breed bull x pups from ex track dogs that have never been tested and pups turn out well or at least ye only hear of the ones that turn out well...

the way i look at it, if you were breeding terriers you wouldnt breed from a terrier that was never tested to do the job you require so why would you do it when your breeding a lurcher?? i'm not expecting her to do the job of a bull cross but i was hoping she would be a bit more single handed... i had a great greyhound bitch about 6 years ago that was very game and she was entered in the same fashion... i put her to a dog that was'nt as hot and the resulting pups took after the father in looks as well as ability... so this time i want to breed from both dogs that are capable of doin the job (fox and hare)... i've had sheila for a good while now and i'm quite attached to her so she will get every chance but i wont be breeding from her no matter how good the stud dog is... then the only obstacle will be whether or not the parents can both reproduce themselves, thats only my theory...

it would be nice to hear everyones esle's view without the usual slanging match :)

thats right mate... plus the wee dog needed a home because she was left into the vets to be PTS so i thought i'd give her a chance and if she was successful at least she would always have a home here... she definately is a nice dog and at the time i thought if i put enough time into her at least some one else could benefit from her if foxes were'nt her thing...
