out last night bunny bashing with the 17hmr

Recommended Posts

i have not posted in here for a while, so i thought i would share last nights outing with you , i had a call from a farmer saying he had cut his barley around his grass fields and he said it was like water ship down and asked if i could pay him a visit.

so i made a call to my mate asking if he wanted to join me and the answer was yes, he picked me up at 8.45 and we started out on a journey of 25 miles to where the farm was, while on the way there, i thought i would phone another mate who had some grass fields close to where we was going to be lamping rabbits, to ask if i could also lamp the rabbits on his grass fields he said yes with pleasure, there is no cattle in the fields he said so go where you like

so we decided to go there first when we got there the gates were already open, ian had been and opened up for us so we went through the gate and turned right driving away from the farm house. well as soon as we pulled in the field there were rabbits every where ,so i loaded up chris got the lamp ready and i got the sponge on the mirror ready we started driving around the grass fields sticking close to the hedge.

we went around the fields once and shot 35 rabbits then sat and had cuppa for about 40 minutes talking to ian then it was round two, we just pulled out from the farm house driving away from it again close to the hedge and chris picked up a real bright pair of eyes FOX he said i said carry on driving down so he did we got to within about 150yards of it switched off ,i put the u caller on and left it for a couple of minutes and put the lamp on and there it was about 40 yards i knew it was close enough for the 17 so i took a head shot and it dropped without a flinch from it .

then there was a quiet look there is another one running up the field towards us from chris . again i put the u caller on dropped the lamp real low so we could just see its eyes on the outside of the beam we let it come right in to about 40 yards again, then it smelt the other fox lying there and ran over to it having a sniff at it, i gave a little whistle and it looked at us and it was just about to turn and run so i took a heart shot real quick and dropped it, so it was lamp off and left the u caller going for a couple of minutes and switched the lamp back on but there was nothing there .

so we left them there while we went around the fields again hoping that another one might be about. we did a lap of the two fields again and shot another 42 rabbits and headed back to where we left the two foxes we had a call but there was nothing so we collected them up and moved on to the next farm . thanking ian on the way past .

we got to the next farm drove down a grass track where there was rabbits on rabbits just walking in front of the truck ,we decided to do one lap of the first field because it was getting late and we were not far from a RAF base so we set off around the field got half way round and chris said here we go another fox ,we pulled up switched off u caller on left it going for a couple of minutes put the lamp on and it was about 15 yards in front of us again i took a head shot with the 17 and again no flinch . we picked it up and carried on around the field shooting another 37 rabbits by this time it was real late so we decided to call it a night we pulled over to where the farmer dumps his rubbish and gutted all 114 rabbits and then set off for the drive home .

i got a couple of photos but forgot to take a photo of the last fox because we had just gutted all the rabbits and took a photo of them and put them back in the truck and drove off without taking one of the third fox . :icon_redface:

i also have had help with the photos from the lads across the water because my pc will not take my soft wear for my phone which i take photos on so thanks lads .

hi Thorburnlad , i have only had over 100 a couple of times but not round my area, its was up in scotland with a keeper friend of mine. the most we have had round here is about 40 to 50 in a night still not bad numbers i know.

i think that the rabbits have done well round us this year and are now in good numbers thats why we got so many, we hardly hardly touched the numbers that was there and soon we will be paying another visit for another good bag.
