Hi all, went to do a bit of rabbit hunting with my terrier today, in and out of brambles and shuch things

I saw a rabbit bolt out of this cover and into a drystone wall, so i set my terrier "floss" to marking it up, then she suddenly went crazy started to whimper and bark, so i set about dismantalling this old wall, stone by stone i got closer with floss still going mad at it. I moved a large stone which must have been about a meter long and weighed a feking ton

And suddenly she lurched forward a started to growl and she looked like she had a hold of somthing which for a second i thort was a rabbit, but i looked at the fur in her mouth and she had bitten off about a quater of a foxes tale but covering this little gap was a huge stone about 3m in length a i could not move it any more, but i didnt go directly to the hole there was like an air pocket through the wall?? but i shudve my hand down and could not feel anything put the hole was under this huge rock!!! so eventually gave up due to being cold wet and not having a spade which would have been very usefull lol.

 

But what i cant under stand is how it got there because there are no holes surrounding it and the only enterence there could have been is a drian pipe that had a good flow of water coming out??? it wasn't gushing with water but there was a fair bit coming out????

hi robert, not sure if i got the picture to of what u r sayin [bANNED TEXT] but it has been known foxes will go under water [bANNED TEXT], i once heard that my [bANNED TEXT] had a terrier to ground dayin away, when dug to there was nowt there only a tube of water! my [bANNED TEXT] knew his dog well and knew somit was amiss, so on further inspction and prodin around he found out that the water was lyin in a dip in the tube, the bloody crafty fox had gone in the water to the other side! so never under estemate the fox [bANNED TEXT]

one of plummers books says his dog disaperaed under water in a river and he thought hed lost it, but it had chased an otter under water and into its hole.

A friend of mine showed me a picture about 20 years ago of a terrier and fox face to face in a hole. When you focus on the scene, both terrier & fox are under water except for their heads which are barely above the water line.

Another lad I knew then had a terrier which would readily go under water, he seemed to relish it and would fetch stuff from below water level.

So it happens, books or not.

My Terriers don't mind the wet , sometimes on the Levels, it can be part and parcel of the job.

plummer was full of shit.... we all know that... but im not bouting for a secdond that dogs go through water behind foxes.... iv heard this off some genuine lads....

 

are you sure this fox wasnt sat in a culvert... the other end could have been good distance away... who knows anyway... you might never find the entrance to where fox in.... but you could find straight away next time you go up....

Foxes can squeeze into some very tight places [bANNED TEXT] the entrance doesnt have to ba an obvious hole a decent sized crack or missing stone in the wall would be enough,the entrance could even be in the top of the wall leading down to the lower levels,nothing would suprise me where foxes are concerned.

You said it there Kane, We've got a Den in the base of an Oak tree, it must be a Vixen squeezing between the roots, I've got a smallish shouldered Russell and she can't get in. It drives her mental.
