][]Just out checking the poults today, brought the 17 HMR as always just in case,a quick check on the pheasant pens and a quick scout around for maggies, grey crows and foxes,as i was driving down ohe of the network of tiny roads, eyes peeled, something caught my eye on te far ditch,a fox lied up sunning its self.I tried to call him in but he had spotted me first,he was120 yards away which was a bit border line for the 17 i had a clear head shot and was confident i could take him as i have taken them at this distance before.cross hair on head, steady, squeeeeeze and thud down he goes,a clean kill.attachment=47383:fox_roes.jpgI decided i would take a spin up later with the lamp, which paid off, first feild lamp on and 60 yards out mr. fox, aquick squeek he looks up,i shoot and down he goes 2 nil to the hunters[attachment=47384:foxmoneystown.jpg

great stuff smasher, i was thinking about getting a 17 hmr, so i went to a gun shop up are way.

he told me the rifle would take mr fox up to 200 yards, is this wrong,or is there a few differant types?

I seriously wouldn't recommend taking a shot with a HMR at that distance under 100 is considered to be the Maximum.

Well done Smasher, great shooting there and some fair distances too.

HMR will take Charlie at whatever distance you can hit him in the brain. Note, brain, not head. They're pretty weedy really, so headshots are a must beyond about 100 yards. 200 is pushing things except in a dead calm conditions with a stable shooting platform and a reliable setup.

thankes sporting shooter, would it be accaret at that distance, cheers horse.

Oh it would be accurate to any distance in flat calm conditions, As Mr L says, it whether you can hit him in the Kill zone, I.e The Brain.

And at 200 yards that target is Tiny. 220 yards is my furthest with the HMR but that was a Crow, needless to say he never felt a thing.

I still would say 100 yards is far enough for a HMR where foxes are concerned. If you want to go further then a centrefire is wholly better.

agree with that sportingshooter  200 yards is a long long way. 200 yards is a good shot even with centrefire yes its more then powerfull but at least you can go for engine room shoot where hmr even with head shot at 200 yards is really pushing it.

it would kill a fox in the head at that range im sure but what would be the cert of that happing ? not very high and we owe it to the fox for a nice clen kill and centrefire does that.

there cracking hm,r are for close range fox out to 100 yards. between the ear and eye and he will drop like a bag od crap

good picture by the way that fox looks a good size one

I never would have taken tye shot if i didnt think i could have taken him cleanly, the conditions were right ie. no wind and i had a good veiw of him.my main sport is working the terriers to ground and i have the greatest respect for my quarry, heres a pic of the fox,he never even heard the shot

around 100 yards is the limit on the hmr........or slightly futher, you just don't have the killing power, never believe most irish gun dealers they would sell you their grandmother..............

maybe he is thinking of the .17 centrefire...........to 200............ :whistling:

Well done on the foxes

As for that gundealer, yep I believe he's trying to sell you the rifle he has in stock. As SS said (most) gundealers will say ANYTHING to sell you something. I pretended I knew nothing (stop laughing down the back) about guns and asked about HMR in an un-named gunshop and oh yeah they'll kill a fox no bother out to 300 yards.

BULLSHIT.

Having used a HMR lots of times, but not owning one, I would suggest 100 yards as the limit on fox. Lots of people will differ with that opinion which is ok by me since I'm not the one getting shot or doing the shooting ;)
