Breeding Gos's

Has anyone tried and had any success with breeding Gos's from a natural pair and how would they go about it? Is it possible to creche rear an unrelated a pair together like you would a pair of Spars and get them to breed that way?

Hello Mate

I bred from a natural pair for a few years until I lost the female last year, I now have the same provem male with another 6 year old female, the male was brought in from Germany in the late 90's! he's wild taken as a earley brancher, because of this he was pretty steady as far as Gos's go! Creche rearing is prbably one of the ways I would go with making up pairs but having said that all the people I have known with natural pairs in the past have used P/R birds, Bob Haddon used to have green fingers as far as breeding gos's went! he would P/R a male and a Unrelated female the male would be loaned out for flying and returned at 3 years old, the female would preferably never be flown or hunted but perhaps steadied up a on the fist! the whole idea of this is the male while being flown had earned some street credit in the Hunting department plus learned all powers of flight, the female on the other hand had none of this being totaly unfit and never killed, this scenario worked perfect and I witnessed it first hand, the male when put in with the female is very confident while the female which has'nt killed didn't consider him to be on her Menu ;), she got a bit arsey with him when her Hormones kicked in but this is where he earned all his stripes from beiong flown and hunted, basically he was one step ahead of her.

This German male I have hear is much the same, he would turn the last female inside out should she ever decide to chase him, the finnish female was no match for him in the limited aviary space! I also know of someone who used to leave a pair of gos's together all year by keeping a large finnish male in with a german female, the fact he was just about her size put her off getting too physical with him, My pair aviary is 24" by 10" split down the middle fitted with 3 camera's, one for the nest ledge and 2 looking over both aviaries, there is a nest ledge in both aviaries which also gives the female a option should she not like the one in her aviary, I will add larch and spruce twigs into the enclosures the end of February! you'll find the male will build in his side and the female in her's, there will also be lots of calling and flying around and Covet showing mainly from the male somtimes with food in his feet, NEVER be tempted to let them in too earley! Big Mistake! watch the birds and her behaviour, there'll be times when you think she looks like a pussycat standing on one leg watching the male but don't be fooled, the male by this time will be getting pretty desperate to give her a good service ;), but the only time that I have ever feel% safe is when the female litterally will meet him at the partition and lean forward as if too stand for him while he is screaming, I'll then drop the partition and watch them for the best part of the day, 99% of the time he will tead her that day, also take the Baths out! a wet male makes a good target for a female :icon_eek:.

I was lucky as I managed to learn from a bloke Bob Haddon through the 90's who had bred Gos's since the 70's, he was the first to produce any captive bred birds in this country from a Gennuine Imported Finnish pair and also was invloved in Goshawk watch in the late 60's 70's when alot was re-introduced, he bred and flew a few noted BFC birds includeing "BELEN" which was his bird and "MARLYN" flown by Ronnie Moore in the Phantom Of The Forest Wildlife program, basically in my mind this bloke thinks Goshawk and seemed to Understand totaly from experience their Behaviour while in the aviary, he was their to help me at the start and put me right and thankfully I gleamed as much knowledge as possible breeding Gos's from this one guy, I listen to no one else when breeding pairs! if I ever need any sort of advice this is the man I go too..

Sorry for running on

Cheers

Nice One Pug :good:

I hope so too mate but to be honest its looking like Bird Flu will be hitting these shores in the near future which will put pay to any movement of birds in this country, DEFRA are already saying that if their is a outbreak they will stop all Imprts and Exports aswell as any movement of birds in this country from one aviary to another premises :icon_eek:, I could well end up with a whole lot of young birds like other breeders smashing themselves up in the aviaries until DEFRA decide to lift their restrictions! Hopefully it won't come to that mate but its looking highly likely, the other worry is that if there is a large outbreak in a certain area they could well carry out a full scale Cull like they did with the foot and mouth a few years back..
