markdog 18
i wouldnt mind getting into greyhound racing as well. what happens once you get your pup, how do u register it with a track and all that stuff? getting started in greyhound racing is relatively easy if you want to put them round the flapping tracks, personally i would browse the classifieds for a young adult dog that is already schooled but may be not up to the owners requirements ie not open class, doesnt stay 4 bends etc. I dog like this can be picked up cheap and is more than adequte for graded sprints on the flaps. As for care and getting the dog ready for a race just keep it warm, feed it well and exercise it. With time and experience you will know the dogs ie what weight they run best at, how much exercise (had one top grade sprinter who ran worse with exercise than if left on bed) Dont start messin with the dogs tryin for that big gamble, just run them genuine for now. kreet 0
do you mean own your own dogs or as in a trainer of your own and other's ? we have an old concrete barn sort thing 15 kennels 1 single kennel in a separate room for quarintine/bitches in season and 2 outdoor paddocks of about 1/4 an acre each we also have scales for weghing and a tred mill also porta mag boxe's and my grandad has a machine for injurys but i dunno how to use it you will also need a selection of medicalines creams ointments etc cause if you have a number of dogs its inevatable you will have injurys. if your having one dog or two then 2 kennels 3 and a half foot bye 6 a raised bed area and thats all they need 2 walks a day three if you can give it and nothing huge walks and excersise wise a good feed is essential racer mix a pound of beef mince or fish mine get aswell as tined tomatoe and 1 and a half brown rolls each dog will vary in the buiscut input but the rest i keep the same they also get cod liver oil every day and an egg every day. as for the dogs it all depends what you want to spend and the purpose of the venture ... i wouldnt personaly waste the money on feeding a dog that i couldnt know was going to win when i tried with it it costs far too much to keep an animal to not get a return when you are keeping 15 and renting the kennels so the dogs in my kennel all cost in the region of 2k the cheapest to one dog whom was 5 but these dogs dont try very often and when they do they win no questions. if its just for lesure reasons and for a lucky win here and there then its not hard to pick up a capable runner but to be fair a dog from the local papers usualy is no use alot of dogs dont even make qualifying times meaning they wont get a race you can buy dogs from the sales on tracks from 100 to 1000 pound but you dont realy know what your buying to be fair. schooling well its not the best idea for your first dog but give the dog the odd chase if you like or just wait till the dogs 15-20 months make sure its fit and start slipping him on your local trap the dog will eather chase the hair or not i could go on for hours but i wont . let me know what your plans are and ill give a bit more advise and if you want put you onto a dog let me know what its for etc and ill sort you something out if you like.
