Grim Reaper 1
The story of my son Liam is certainly a strange one to tell! LOL Two years ago, he was very much a proper little anti - he loved wildlife too much to shoot it . . . . "guns should not be allowed" . . . . "how can you shoot animals Dad!?" . . . . . " Your wicked, you are!" Since then, he has changed in himself - from simply wanting to 'have a go' at actually firing my air rifle at simple targets, through the stage of "Aww dad, can we do a shooting range today in the garden!?" type excitement, and finally into shooting cards and stuff at the length of our garden regularly - only under my direct supervision of course. Recently, after accompanying me to the crematorium 3 or 4 times over a couple of months, and after the crem superintendant meeting and observing Liam, he has been given permission, in his own right, to go there anytime he wants to - obviously, i have to drive him, and so he can only go when i do, or i am able to. The breakthrough for me came the other week after we had done several target session at the crem together (we can shoot at longer range there than in our garden), when he turns round and says to me "Dad, when can I actually shoot a rabbit for Grandad's dinner?" I was chuffed, to say the least! Now, although I consider that Liam has been getting 1 magazine (10 shots) of pellets into a card, time and again at 35-40 yards, and the group sizes are between 15mm to an inch at 35 yards (Well done son! ), i felt it right to have him do some more practice first, just to get him 100% comfortable with taking the actual shot - breathing, holding the rifle steady etc. The end result is that, in my mind, i think the point at which he will be rabbit shooting will not be that far away. Bearing in mind also he recently turned 9 years old, I think he has an extremely good eye for his age. I cannot believe the change in the lad, over the space of about a year - i can only put it down to the fact of him going to the crem with me, acting as my spotter and collecting the rabbits i have shot and doing target shooting stuff, like? What do you say guys, do you think i'm right with agreeing him to go for the kill soon? I feel i am correct in doing so, when he is fully competant. Input will be appreciated. Regards, Grim. ChrisJones 7,975
Sounds like he's ready, Grim... start him slowly and talk through it all. Justify everything you do and you'll have a well trained, well informed, pest controller to help you out. Plus a future ambassador for airgunning. Sounds fantastic and it's good to see young blood coming into the sport! Good luck with it Grim! All the best! Quote Link to post

Liam's behaviour 'on site' has at least shown me that he has taken what i have taught him so far in well, especially the safety aspects. He is a pretty canny little man, and has had some good ideas . . . . . and PLENTY of questions, which is a good thing to see - shows his mind is ticking things over nicely. It could have been a whole world worse . . . . . he could have decided to grow into one of them ball sacks we call a chav!! . . . . . . PSML I thank the lord that is not so in his case.
