Recommended Posts

Hi all

i have been asked by a friend (the owner of land) to shoot rabbits at his cricket club as they are becoming a real pest.I have a shot gun licence and want to use my shotgun.Do i have to inform the police that i will be shooting there,do i also need the owner to apply for shooting permission to use shotgun on his land.Is there any size limits on the land in order for me to use a shotgun. There is also a house nearby do i have to inform them.If anyone knows the answers to these questions please let me know?

Thank you.

As far as I am aware, if your friend ( the landowner ) has given you permission to shoot then he shouldnt need to ask permission from anyone for you to shoot.

You yourself should have to take into consideration the safety and noise factors and decide if it is safe to use a shotgun.

If you were to miss you need to ensure that your shot will fall on empty fields or have a suitable backstop.

I would ask him if he knows the owners of the property, and if not I would let them know when you will be shooting.

If they were to complain you might get a visit from the police, so basically if youre unsure, check.

I know that it isnt compulsory to inform the police when youre shooting on private land, but with it being a cricket ground, im not sure. Maybe someone will let us both know.

If the house owners were to complain or tell you not to it might be best to consider a silenced shotgun, airgun etc which cause a lot less disturbance, just to save yourself a lot of hassle.

Just my opinion, dont take it as gospel. :victory:

All above is sound but to add a bit......

If you have been asked to control the vermin problem by someone who has the legal rights to ask you and you are the legal owner of a shotgun, you do not legally have to inform ANYONE you will be shooting there. Now.... look at is sensibly and you will probably think it might be a good idea the inform the police and get a URN from them and have a chat with; or do your best not to annoy the neighbours.
