dare 1,103
vet said it was just a soft tissue strain, gave me anti inflamitry and told me to rest. Still the same and ive noticed his knee is swollen so its deffinalty that, someone said maybe a ligament problem im dreading that as i want to be able to condition the dog. if it was a ligament hed be in pain though surely? he still wants to do everything and hasnt ever cried from the pain. skycat 6,174
Sorry to be picky, but the fact that the vet said it was a soft tissue strain to me implies that you went to see an ordinary vet: like going to see a GP. The words: 'soft tissue strain' imply that the vet hasn't a clue what the dog has done, but they've ruled out a broken bone! Did the vet say exactly WHAT soft tissue the dog had strained? Not knocking ordinary vets, but they are not specialists in these type of injuries: you want, as I said in an earlier post, to see a specialised Greyhound vet: they are the ONLY ones who will correctly diagnose your dog's problem. I must admit, albeit it from a very short video with the dog only walking, that it does look rather like a lot of dogs I've seen that are seldom road walked and get most of their exercise galloping. Too much early galloping, especially in heavily built dogs like your's, and especially when a dog is not fit, can stretch and damage tendons and ligaments. If you want a proper diagnosis and correct treatment plan then please go to a Greyhound vet!!
blaev 1
"Too much early galloping, especially in heavily built dogs like your's, and especially when a dog is not fit, can stretch and damage tendons and ligaments." - Well said. I was ignorant of this with my boxer who is a big lad but thinks hes a greyhound. 1 ruptured cruciate ligament later and £800 for the op to put it right and i learnt my lesson. Shame he didn't - 6 months later he spotted a rabbit 2 mins into a walk and BROKE his lead to get after it. 2nd ruptured cruciate, now he has both back legs done, £1600 total on ops and will probably be crippled with arthritis early. Took months to get him fit again now he is on a strong lead till at least 2 miles into the walk and is only let off when he's calmed down & warmed up. If you look carefully at the pic you can see one of the 9 inch op scars down the front of his back leg. Good luck with yours mate.
