leegreen 2,222
My bitch is having its first season and not having a running dog before I wondered if it will cause her any problems? I thought it would OK as I've never had problems working Terriers in season. She is being run with another bitch and will be lamping. Quote Link to post

brock 11
leave her be while in heat, then you can run her for a few weeks then dont run her 9 weeks after up untill 12 weeks as she will have milk on her and running her could cause her to get mastitus Quote Link to post

Whats the fatty tissue ting? It's not running them in season that causes a build up of fatty tissue: its a perfectly normal after effect of being in season. When a bitch's body thinks it might be in pup it lays down fat around the internal organs: all part of the process of getting ready to have pups: a wild canine would need to stack on the weight prior to being laid up in her den rearing pups and she needs all the energy she can get for those first few weeks of rearing young uns. Most bitches run fine for about a month after their season finishes, but watch out after that. the period from 5 to 12 weeks after the season is when you need to take it easy with the bitch as her muscles also lose their tone and can be damaged more easily if she is run hard. Cheers, she won't be run hard she is still young(10 months approx)She is still getting training, running the beam and recall/retreve on turning off the lamp etc and I must say I am well pleased with her progress.
