stevoman 4
Do we have any setter men here who adore and love to work the breeds? Quote Link to post
undisputed 1,664
Do we have any setter men here who adore and love to work the breeds? I used to have an English Setter that I used for ferreting she could mark a bunny hole from about 5yrds...she was no good for shooting as she used to freeze the way only setters can and you'd be ready with the gun only to find it was a bloody fly Quote Link to post

Mine is 18 months old now and is running in very hard to control but i have every bit of confidence in her. Im working hard on her and hope she comes along. i made one major boo boo with her though. i shot a rabbit over her a month ago and it has totally confused her so it has. Quote Link to post

She was 3yr old when I got her very highly strung and took her awhile to settle but after that she was fine. You could shoot over her no probs. I mostly ferreted with her because of her marking ability which was amazing. The one thing I do rember about her was that she was full of energy and could run all day so just gave her free reign. Malt 379
My mother's got an Irish Setter X Retriever, he's 3 years old. Not done any work with him, but the first time I showed him a rabbit bury, BANG, he got onto it and started marking. We came across one bury, and he tried getting down the bloody hole, whining & digging like mad! I would have bet that that particular bury had a coney at home! I'm going to take him out a few times over the coming season and see how he does. The only problem is that he's got a phobia about going in the car, at one point, you'd only have to open the boot, tell him to get in & he'd chuck up. He's getting better now though, I've managed two short trips without him blowing chunks, and he gets into the car without being dragged now. Quote Link to post
