ultimathule 29
Hi. I am wanting to start ferreting andw ould like to know what would be classed as adequate housing to keep ferrets in. Got a book on ferreting but sadly no mention of housing in it.I remember "when I were a lad" my father kept his ferrets in what was nothing more than a rabbit hutch, but I read somewhere that this type of housing is not suitable for ferrets. Can anyone recommend housing that I could buy online(diy skills are not up to much) or even a picture would help. Thanks in advance Quote Link to post
The one 8,463
Rabbit hutches are fine but your looking at 8x2x2 for a couple of ferrets but a lot of folk have moved over to courts but it depends on the room youv'e got Quote Link to post
sue 1
its ok to keep a couple of ferrets in a large rabbit hutch ,but if you can give them more space the better Quote Link to post
paddy.t 5
ive got a 4ft X 2ft double tier hutch and a 6X4 run and thats fine for 2 Quote Link to post
stubby 175
its all down to available space, those of us that have large courts, can if need be, not interact with the ferts for a day or two, as they still have large areas for exercise, if your limited to a 3ft rabbit hutch, fine, but you'll need to interact with them on a daily basis, to get the best out of them. you could also keep them in a cage as already mentioned and not handle them daily, but then your probably have problems come ferreting season Quote Link to post
gilly-93 31
The more room the better but if you carnt have lots of room get a 2 tier rabbit hutch that will be fine Quote Link to post

That sounds pretty straightforward to me. Dont need to go building any fancy ferret enclosure just yet! Quote Link to post
Dan_Jones 7
measure up your available space then go out shopping for a hutch to fit it .. simple mate lol Quote Link to post
will.f11 24
use up all of your available space you are happy to let ferrets on. If you have alot of space and have enough money to do it a court is best. Contact John Hubery on here as I have heard he makes really nice court systems. But remember you wont get it cheap unless you make it yourself Quote Link to post

Thanks in advance I have two seperate areas which I keep my couple of ferrets in. The first one is a pretty standard hutch/cage i made which is where they sleep, eat and shit in. The other some might call a court or run, but isnt really much more than a pen I threw together. they spend the dayime in there playing and that. The food, water and shit tray follow them into the pen, and there is an area for them to sleep in in there too (part of an acoustic guitar with an old jumper thrown in). if they really wanted to escape this pen im sure they could, but as it is inside a garage they are still contained. Coatesy900 0
the guitar thing sounds quite good. I may try and buy an old shitted up guitar off school. yeah, might only do until they grow a bit though, the hole is just the right size for them now, and they are only kits so it might need enlarging with the jigsaw in a few months. jultaylor1972 2
I started off with this. And very soon changed to this. I made this for them to play in under supervision. Then I changed to this. And finally, this is what I have settled with, its perfect for the ferrets and great for me too! I started off like you - A two teir hutch is fine etc, and in reality it is, just having ferrets leads to wanting better set ups for them and the bigger the better. Good luck in your quest.
