van taken and crashed

Recommended Posts

hi all just thought i would ask you smart people on here

i have a ford transit van a few weeks ago it was taken from out side my house

i found it the next day at the top of the next road just before i was going to

report it stolen so i never did i didnt claim on the insurance because

it wasnt that badly damaged i.e.wing mirror and bumper broke and hot wired

so i got a call this morning from the insurance company claiming i had crashed in to another

car and didnt stop (hit and run)

just a coulpe of questions

1. where do i stand with the insurance company

2. where do i stand with the police

3. what can i do so i dont get in trouble

4. is it my fault for not reporting it stolen

Well you should of reported it really but i can understand why you didnt , i think the best thing to do is contact the police a,s,a,p as there may still be some evidence of the theft

the insurance company will try not to pay out by claiming you havent reported it to them in time , but as you probably already have explained the situation to them they may fight your corner if you can provide some evidence

beaware it is also an offence not to report a crime so you may be liable for arrest

the easy option is admit liability for the crash claiming you rang your insurance company and asked the forms be sent to you and hope they pay out, good luck hagar

Be prepared for some awkward questions, you should have reported it to the police even if you didn't intend to make a claim. You shouldn't have even touched the van until the police had been & seen it. You're going to have a hell of a time convincing them that you haven't committed a hit & run, as that's what the suspicion is likely to be.

its amazing what some people report to police,

my local rag this week featured an article about a car break in where someone climbed through an unlocked boot into the front of the car and stole a whopping.............. 45 pence, and the owner reported the theft, the phone call to the police probably cost more than that, and people wonder why the police are always tied up
