The Boxing Tournament!

Recommended Posts

I was honered to be apart of the BIGGEST amatuer boxing event ever to be held in the world last week...there where fighters/teams that had traveled from as far away as switzerland, korea, new zealand, mexico and canada!...there was over 1700 boxers, and seven rings going at the same time!...talk about ego's and testostrome!...lol.

To top all that off, including my team mate and my coach, i think we was the only White fuckers there!...lol...even the Ref for my first fight was a Paki!...seems i cant get away from 'em!..lol.

A few firsts for me...i have never boxed, and have only trained in boxing, properly, for the last 4-6 months...me and the other guy from our gym, where the only fighters out of 1700+ fighters that had never had a boxing match!..lol...whats the worst that can happen right?..lol.

There was 30+ fighters in my bracket...i was the only white guy, the oldest, the shortest, the least exsperianced and these lads where ripped at 165lbs (maybe 3% Body Fat) and then theres me, when i go Pro i will go 145lbs, and i fight at 155lbs at around 7% Body Fat, so that will tell you how small i was compared to these lads!

I hadnt been able to hit a bag, or spar for 12 days before the event, due to hand injury (left hand AGAIN!) so just shadow boxed etc,..

First fight was against a lad from Texas, who had moved from Mexico...at 6.0" he was bigger than me, and had the reach, so i just planned on getting in close, dodging the jabs and working in close with upper cuts and hooks...that was the plan anyway!..lol.

The bell sounded, and it was like two Pit-Bulls running across the ring to meet each other!...no style, no skill, just the sort of fight you see in a bar/pub!..lol...i even got told off for head butting!..lol.

I swear, that guy had a hard head...i hit fairly hard for my size, and although i was fighting "up" a division or two, i still felt powerfull enough...that mo-fo just wouldnt DIE!..lol.

We went at it for three, 2min rounds, and with about 10 seconds left in the third i hit him enough that his eyes rolled back and the Ref gave him a standing eight count...i wasnt impressed with myself in that fight, it was scrappy and untalented, but i won a decision...i feel another 30 seconds i would have had him belly up on the canvas though!...

Second fight...worst possible match up for me!...some black lad, and a real "rangy" fighter....liked to fight like a coyote, in and out, in and out, hurting you quick and then getting distance...just the kinda guy that gives me trouble!...

First round starts, and straight away, it feels like his fists are made of steel, and my head gear is a fecking magnet!...that boy lite me the f**k up!..lol.

I was getting in close and doing the best i could, but it was obvious i had no place evcen being this guys sparring partner...but what do you do?...yeah i coulda taken a knee, not came out to the bell, or just curred out...but i did my best, and just went pete-tong for three rounds...i did get frustrated, and grabbed the f****r buy the head and tryed to throw him through the ropes, i didnt get him through the ropes, but he hit the matt fairly hard and fast!...second time we went to a clinch and i pulled a little, but he dove on it, and i got a point taken for "wrestling"..lol...not that it mattered.

The guy had had 15 fights, and finished all his guys off, but three i think!...the last seven fights he had the guys KO'ed or 'standing 8" in the first!...he asked me "Hey man, where you from!?"..."Im British, but i live in Missouri now"...he looked at me and said, "f**k man, i dont wanna fight another British guy again!"...kind of a nice compliment i think!..lol.

So im 1-1 at Boxing...its a hard game, and a sprinting game...i have no place at 165lbs but feel that at 152lbs i would be better, and a big lad for that weight...all in all i like MMA more, but now i understand why theu call Boxing the "Sweat-Science"...its a art form, and you find out who you are when the going gets tough, when your lungs are on fire, and you gotta guy who is much better than you whacking the shit outta you!....ive always been a fan of boxing, although i like the older fighters,...Dempsey and Marciano being my favs i think...but having done it a little, and maybe do more in the future, i can appreciate it more now!...

Thanks guys,..

lol...i dont know about ok, but i did my best!...thats all i worry about mate...if i can look in the mirror the next morning and say "I did my best", then i dont care if i win or loose mate, its not about that to me...although winning is NICE!..lol.

Its funny you should say about the coaching..me and my mate was talking just the other day about the first time i cornered him for MMA!..."Kill that mother f****r!" is all i said the whole fight!...lmao!...dont think i would make much of a coach!..lol.

Nice to see your still involved though mate, with your face though, i would have thought you was a veteran of THOUSANDS of boxing matches!...lol... :tongue2:

Good to see your rounding yourself in all aspects kye.....as you know the amateur and pro game is almost 2 totally different sports these days and you probably know yourself you will learn more and become more capable with your hands with serious knowledgable sparring than all the amateur tournaments in the world.....all good experience though no doubt..... ....all the best.

Hi Guys,..

Yeah Simo, had to bring it to my level...i almost kneed him in the head as well!..lol.

Gnasher, as you said mate, Pro and Am is totally different mate, and i honestly think that the weakest point in MMA today is people boxing...i hit hard for my size, and my chin is fairly decent...my ground game is good defensivly, and decent attacking as well...once i get this 'range' thing down, i will be laughing mate...i honestly feel im getting fairly well rounded...i can out strike most guys at my level at the moment, and even if they are more technical, im dumb enough to stay in an exchange long enough to land summat, even if i have to eat a few...

It was a great exsperiance, and i look forward to seeing if some of my newer obtained skills carry over to my true passion of MMA,...i have a deeper understanding of 'hand fighting' now though, and it is a suprisingly mentaly demanding aspect of real fighting!...i look forward to carrying on with my study of western boxing!

Interesting what you say.....ive always felt the top level strikers in mma are not particularly good technically and certainly not from a boxing point of view.....personally i dont feel boxing has much place in mma and the more succesful strikers have more of a kick boxing style to their striking as opposed to boxing..... probably 90 % of strikes thrown in mma is a potential knock out blow compared to around 30 per cent in boxing.....this for me is why i dont feel boxing really has a place in mma.....most stand up or striking coaches within mma do not have a background in boxing but many have a background in kick boxing......so stands to reason really.

I agree from what i see in mma striking is way behind other disciplines when it comes to technical ability, even chuck liddell who would be considered an excellent striker, has pretty poor basic technique......but again, his striking was learned through kick boxing so again self explanatory really.....

Its high time the amateur boxing rules were changed.....everyone is crying out for it and the sooner they are the sooner we will see lads staying amateur for longer.......as it is,apart from the draw of money most sensible coaches want a good prospect turned pro as soon as possible to rid him of the amateur traits.....cant be right can it.

I guess you would call it 'Hybrid-Freestyle'...its very BJJ orientated, but i LOVE leg locks, so i throw plenty of lower body subs in as well, most of them are Sambo based mate...my wrestling is freestyle i guess, but i dont like shooting in for doubles or singles, and feel that my takedowns/throws are best done from the clinch, me being big for my weight division, im not as quick, but usualy have more strength so i use that to my advantage when i can....i wouldnt say i have any 'style' realy, but i do like a good toe-to-toe dragged out slug fest...lol...and the crowd like that aswell, so thats cool to please the people that are buying the tickets...i dont realy care where the fight is anymore, i just deal with it, standing or on the ground...

I don't think you can go past BJJ mate for your ground game, boxing is the way to go too, you watch any kickboxer in against a boxer when they are toe to toe using their hands, the boxer will make him look silly.

Never been real good with leg locks, love chokes though so I always used to use them, never really liked them used on me though.

All the best with it and hurry up and hit the big time so I can show off the T-shirt Stab's shouted me.

I think to be good at leglocks you need real confidence in your ability and pretty much flawless technique......back in my day leglocks were unheard of in a fight, come to that so were armbars and most other submissions ( during the war ) :D ........but having rolled around a little and chatted to a few chaps pretty experienced in this game ive come to the conclusion that to carry out a succesful knee bar for example you really need to commit 100 % to it,which in itself go,s against all the natural instincts, having your back to a man who is likely to smash you round the chops for your efforts....hence why you can understand lads not totally committing to the hold with one eye on their opponents hands, and therefore not succeeding with it......i guess technique and confidence in your technique go a long way !
