English Springer Spaniel

Recommended Posts

Im getting a 7 week old enlgish springer spaniel this week. I am going to train for shooting but was wondering if i could train an english springer spaniel to ferret with me, like lurchers and stuff? Because i would think they would be too lively? What do you think? Plus any ideas of how to train dogs when ferreting?

Thanks very much,

you could get the dog to let you know when bunnies are home, saves you alot of time netting empty burries

correct me if im wrong but is that not all part and parsell of pointing :whistling:

You could use it to mark. My mother's just bought a working ESS pup, I'm going to take him ferreting when he's old enough, not just for the marking but because of the amount of rabbits that hide in the cover on our permissions, instead of in the burys.

The theory is that we'll use him to flush the rabbits out of the cover & into their holes. Between the lads that I go ferreting with, we've got 3 terriers, but the springer will give us another tool, and will hopefully push on through the thick cover that bit better.

A spanniels a handy dog when your ferreting ,they will never have the speed to catch a bolting rabbit but i use mine for marking burrows , holding rabbits in the net flushing rabbits into the long net etc the lists endless
